Local residents describe the accident that left Steffens with leg injuries after a winter haying incident. Neighbors Lostant Walter Shearer and others helped him, while he recovered at home in a wheelchair.
Henry Rotary Club heard Olin Wack Howlett of the American Farm Bureau Federation urge strong farmer representation in Washington and Springfield. He cited 300 lobbyists in D C and 70 in Illinois, noted Farm Bureau grass roots policy setting, and defended that most members are small farmers earning under 5000 dollars. He blamed fixed price supports for surpluses and price distortions, urging flexible supports for upcoming crops.
Golden Gaiden son of Wil Sams Golden and Magnolia resident Magnolia died Saturday May 30 1955 after a few hours in hospital. Survived by many nephews and friends. Services were held August 2 at Dysart Funeral Home Magnolia with Rev G D Landes in charge. Burial followed at Magnolia Cemetery.
Lt. Sgt. William Dean Feddericke of the US Air Force died July 30 in Japan after overseas service including Korea. Born December 11, 1929 in Marshall County, he enlisted at 17 and served in radar, motor division, and multiple overseas tours. He supported Japanese orphans with funds from relatives and friends. He is survived by his parents Lester and Carrie Feddericke, two sisters Katherine Condit and Lillian Lester, and four brothers Glenn, Kenneth, and two others. An infant brother James Ray and sister Beatrice Turpin preceded him.
The Marshall Putnam fairgrounds host the annual 4 H fall fair with beef dairy clothing and food projects judged. Tonight at 7 30 p m Norman Stehl and his accordion band open the program as the grand champion steer is chosen by judge Harold Doubet. Livestock display follows the prize steer selection while girls model dresses and are recognized for construction. Winners advance to the state fair and Share the Fun Festival winners perform with Steuben Hay shakers to close.
Frank G. Carr Edward street was named this morning to serve as assessor of Henry township for the balance of the term. Linus McFarlin resigned as he moves to Danvers Illinois Carr will serve the remainder of McFarlin's term until 1957.
George Schmitt Jr. aged 16 of Henry and Sheffield died after a raft incident on a strip mine lake near his home. A companion raised alarm, rescue efforts failed, coroner ruled accidental drowning. Funeral at St. Patrick's Church Sheffield with burial in parish cemetery. he was a Mineral High School student and an active, exemplary youth.
The Henry city council tabled consideration of a half cent sales tax amid debate on revenue, potential referendum, and impacts on neighboring towns. Aldermen noted mixed views and urged slow, targeted use of any new funds.
Henry merchants plan a community wide Dollar Days sale Friday and Saturday August 19 20 with Wiedman's store opening that day. A weekly drawing at the Henry Theatre Saturday at 9 30 p m will cap the event followed by a street dance with Lee Poff and her Midwestern Playboys.
Michael Fahy a long time Toluca and Chicago resident and former Illinois legislator died at 5109 Monroe Street Chicago July 28 from complications of illness. He served in the Illinois House from 1908 to 1934 and was active in Democratic circles. Surviving: his wife Evangeline. a daughter Mrs Augane of Sarre toward Rockford. five grandchildren. and siblings. Burial was at St Ann's Toluca.
The Army Engineers considered selling a nearly four acre parcel near the lock pond for private use at 150 to 600 dollars with a top offer of 400 if not sold. City officials and business leaders discussed extending Waterworks Park under the bridge to include the area, and the Army would assist with dredging equipment when needed.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at Boose funeral home for Mrs. Clarence Ely of Hopewell township who died Monday morning at home after a lengthy illness. The service included organ preludes, two vocal solos, and was conducted by Pastor T. J. app with pastors from nearby churches assisting. Interment was in Henry City cemetery. Mrs. Ely, born Viola May Thielbar in 1898, was the youngest of nine children and married Clarence Ely in 1927. Surviving are her husband, two daughters Sharon Specious and Donna Jean, three sisters, a brother, and several nieces and nephews.
