A historic sketch preview promotes a brick library in Central Park. Voters are asked to approve a question that would allow the city council to grant permission for the library board to pursue a new building funded by private contributions, not taxes.
Brown led the Roberts township board Tuesday afternoon in council at Ith town. The meeting voted to fund road work along Route 17 near St Paul’s Lutheran at 39, South Augustamon Street. The action aims to improve local conditions with heavy traffic expected.
In Sparland and Steuben township a township election produced 380 votes. Republican candidates won. veteran William B. Riddell was re-elected superintendent over Merle Dawson. Don Kear led Republicans with 246 to 127. Lyman Vincent drew a six year term as treasurer and Inez Donel was two years. Cemetery move to Chillicothe. levy set around 4000 dollars.
Hopewell township voters chose without opposition in a local supervisor race. Republican Aidione Sr. and Democrat K Holz Jr. faced off in precincts 7 and 3, with results announced for the Hopewell area.
Mitchell Wilson, a Republican, was re elected road commissioner of Lacon township defeating Democrat John Giosta 383 to 120 by 263 votes. Wilson won both Lacon precincts with 214 to 54 in precinct one and 169 to 66 in precinct two.
A quiet election day in Putnam county produced no contests. Réger-Mead was not named reaper visor and Roger Atkins was highway commissioner in Senachwine township. Dease Morris and William Martens were named road commissioners in Hennepin and Magnolia. In Granville Aug Moews and Frank Elena were re elected.
Ralph Drummer Gerald Metzger and Albert L Bassi won seats on the Wenona anti school board Tuesday defeating George Lambourn John E Davies and Al Yarc in a local election.
Clark Rediger, a Democrat, was elected road commissioner in Richland Township on Tuesday. He received 123 votes to 114 for Charles Grill, an Independent.
In Evans township Roscoe Ball was re elected supervisor and Henry Flesburg was named road commissioner both running unopposed with 210 votes cast.
In La Prairie township 43 votes were cast. Neil Peugh was re-elected supervisor and Clarence Rebholz was re-elected road commissioner. Both ran unopposed and won in the tally.
In Bell Plain township LaRose two Democrats Walter Ward Henry for road commissioner and Lawrence Holvenson for constable ran unopposed in Tuesday's election with no opposition.
In Milo township Tuesday voters chose John Coggins of the Community Party with 97 votes to defeat William Minter of the Citizens Party who had 88 and John Menerey, independent. Bernard Sharkey won supervisor, Ray Blaisdell was elected constable, and Howard Allen became justice of the peace. all ran unopposed.
Mr and Mrs C A Pratt and Edith Helen attended the funeral for Mrs Elmer Gray at Norberg Funeral Home in Princeton. Mrs Gray formerly Mae Pratt lived in Davenport with her son Clark E Gray family. She is survived by a sister and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mrs Mary Hickey widow of James P Hickey of Camp Grove were held at St Patrick s church in Camp Grove. Interment followed in the parish cemetery. She died April 4 after long illness with six daughters three sons and many grandchildren among survivors.
Henry Campbell elected yesterday to succeed Col. Robert R. McCormick as publisher of the Chicago Tribune. He is a member of the Swan Lake Duck Club of Henry and has hunted ducks locally for years, with Walter Miller and the Miller family among his acquaintances. Don Clark of Henry has hunted with Campbell on several occasions.
County Treasurer Zenas Graves announced that the 1955 tax bills based on 1954 assessments and levies will be ready for mailing about April 15.
Incumbent supervisor Carl Junker and highway commissioner Warren Chamberlain were reelected in Roberts township. Junker received 140 votes and Chamberlain 142 in an uncontested race with 150 ballots cast. The results reflect a surprisingly high turnout for a noncompetitive election.
Local churches including Baptist Presbyterian Christian Putnam and Magnolia Methodist join in Holy Week events. Thursday night union communion at the Methodist church led by Dr. T J M Crapp with Rev Orville Masemory and Rev Vin Schultz assisting. Good Friday services at the Presbyterian church from 12 to 3 with seven 25 minute periods using Seven Last Words. Easter Sunrise 6 am at the Christian church conducted by Henry County youths with special music.
County Red Cross fund drive lags behind targets with only Evans township fully subscribed. County fund chairman Fred G Garrels notes some townships report only partially and warns the county quota may not be met. With federal support withdrawn, Marshall county raises funds to sustain the regional blood bank program and provide free blood locally.
The Henry Merchants’ drawing will award $80 this Saturday night after last week’s consolation of $10 won by Mrs. Guy Ransom. If the first winner is absent, $40 is added to the fund for next week, making the prize $80. Bruce Bauter and William Barry assisted by Bissell Bhaver at the feney Theatre explain tickets from about 50 Henry businesses. Tickets must be deposited by 9 p.m. on Saturday.
Joseph Hageman, veteran highway commissioner of Henry township, was re elected in quiet balloting Tuesday. He ran unopposed on the Republican ticket and received 136 votes, 68 in each precinct. A write in campaign backed Donald Quinn collected 46 votes, mostly on the Democratic ticket. One write in vote was cast for Al Tuttle for justice of the peace.
The Henry State Bank will be closed all day Friday April 8 in observance of Good Friday.
Fred Bestold of Lacon reports Marshall county parcels to secure the east side of the Illinois river road to Lacon are mostly signed with a few due soon. Condemnation talks exist for a couple of tracts as the county highway department funds the project and aims for a summer letting. Putnam County progress also reported with $30,000 allotted and most right of way secured from Hennepin to Carr Bros farm pending parcel descriptions for the lower stretch.
City attorney Robert T. Swengel resigned at the regular meeting to join the Gregg law practice in Wanonm. He requested immediate effect. Mayor pro tem appointed John J. Wosik as city attorney as council weighs a successor.
Morine said Putnam county will obtain right of way without delay with cooperation from the Marples and Torgeson. The 14 mile link between Hennepin and Lacon will feature six bridges and extensive culverts as plans proceed. The full project the cost exceeds one million dollars and work will begin after the right of way is secured.

Chamlin Engineering proposes 53 new street lights for Henry's downtown and west end business districts at an estimated total cost of 29150. The plan includes 42 lights downtown and 11 in the depot area with 25 ft steel poles and overhead wiring, plus $29000 for sidewalks and gutter work on Edward street and East Park Row.
The council reviews a street and sidewalk upgrade along Edward Street and East Park Row with 150 tons of gravel 478 square yards base and 4 42 light standards. Financing options include voluntary or legal special assessments a public benefit tax or motor fuel tax funds. Alternative plans divide costs by area and project scope.
