Henderson County Budget Cuts Property Tax to 43.1 Cents
Henderson County Manager John Mitchell presented a 2023 24 budget that lowers the property tax rate to 43.1 cents per 100 valuation, a 23 percent cut from 56.1. The proposal aims for revenue neutrality, keeps the county among the lowest rates in North Carolina, and draws 18.7 million from the fund balance to balance a 191 million spending plan.

Attorneys agree to hire forensic auditor for cemetery
In a court hearing on April 26, attorneys for Shepherd Memorial Park and the North Carolina Cemetery Commission agreed to depose the cemetery's former attorney and hire a certified public accountant to conduct a forensic audit of books and bank records. The move follows Shepherd Memorial Park's receivership in 2021 amid consumer complaints and regulators' bid to hold Shepherd in contempt for asset and revenue disclosures. Shepherd testified she knew nothing about operations in 2021.
