Local Korean War veterans sail to South Korea on honor trip
About a dozen veterans and their wives depart Hendersonville for Seoul on a trip funded by Korean organizers. Led by Henderson County native Hilliard Staton, a 1953 54 Marine tank unit veteran, the group aims to view Korea’s progress since the war. Staton, turning 84, recalls Panmunjom tents and 22 hour flights, while noting gratitude from the Korean people and uncertainty over funding sources.
