Duke Energy Advances Smarter Energy Grid Plan
Duke Energy officials described a 10 year effort to modernize North Carolina's electric grid and shift from coal to cleaner natural gas. The plan includes retiring a 50 year old Asheville coal plant, building two new natural gas units, possible on site simple cycle facility by 2023, and adding solar at the Asheville site while expanding the regional grid to meet projected 20 percent population growth by 2030.
