Henderson County considers sales tax and landfill fee to balance budget
Henderson County commissioners eyed a quarter cent local option sales tax and a $20 annual landfill fee to offset a predicted $2 million deficit as they began crafting the 2016 17 budget and a four year capital plan costing over $100 million. County Manager Steve Wyatt outlined finances, noting sales tax revenue at $18.9 million and a fund balance near $42 million with a policy target of 12 percent. The board weighed lowering reserves to 10 percent to free up funds, while taxes remained at 51.36 cents. The tax rate is among the lower rates in North Carolina for counties over 100,000 residents.
