D A clears officer in drug suspect death and literacy council adds directors
District Attorney Greg Newman cleared Hendersonville police Sgt. Brandon McGaha of wrongdoing in the shooting death of Rufus Cedric Baker during an undercover drug investigation. Baker, 32, of Asheville, died in a Walmart lot after approaching an officer with a gun, while a witness described the informant and officer Colby Allman present. The SBI found the shooting justified as Baker attempted to escape. The article also notes new Blue Ridge Literacy Council directors Margaret Price Helen Bishop and Octavia Dunbar, and outlines literacy programs and community fundraising events.
