Memoir of Mary Orr recounts Civil War era trek to join Union
Transylvania County writer Mary Middleton Orr born 1843 and married to Robert Orr IV. In 1864 at age 24 she and her mother walked from North Carolina toward Knoxville to join Union husbands through Confederate regions. The tale recalls floods, robber raiders, river crossings, and hardship. Both died well after the war and are buried at Beulah Baptist Church cemetery.
