Frost and hail devastate 2024 North Carolina apple crop
Growers faced frost and a May hail storm that ruined hundreds of acres. Jeff and Jerred Nix described losses from 30 to 40 acres, with varieties including Golden Delicious, Gala, Rome, and Fuji. The storm carved a narrow damage path from Sugarloaf Mountain to Bearwallow and beyond, threatening livelihoods ahead of the 78th North Carolina Apple Festival.
