Large tree blocks downtown Church Street in blackout
A hardwood tree fell across South Church Street after sundown on Monday, taking down power lines and plunging downtown into darkness from Allen Street to Sixth Avenue. Fire Chief Miller said downtown was pitch black with restaurants and shops affected for hours. The tree, in front of the former Thos Shepherd funeral home, appeared to drop without wind and was described as old and hollow by staff.
