Ninth Avenue alumni recall days and marker dedication
About 120 alumni and families gathered for a reunion at the old Ninth Avenue School in Hendersonville days after a historic marker dedication. Floyd Benjamin, a 1961 graduate, recalled the school’s impact and the long bus rides endured by Black students from Transylvania and Polk counties. The school, built in 1950 with a state grant, opened in 1951 under principal John Marable with music and a keynote by State Superintendent Clyde Erin.
