Fraud conviction fuels 177 acre Pisgah forest expansion
The 177 acre land transfer connects Pisgah National Forest with a previously isolated 1 500 acres through a Mills River tract seized after a Mills River farmer Robert Warren and wife Viki Warren were convicted in a long running crop insurance fraud case. The U S Attorney Jill Westmoreland Rose lauded the deal with Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy and USDA, noting conservation easements on adjacent lands and the preservation of resources and public enjoyment for generations. The process, spanning 2010 to 2014, culminated with transfer of the Hoot Owl tract to the Forest Service and conservation of Grey Heaven and Norton properties, aided by grants and donations.
