An agreement reached between Mine Mill and Smeltermen union conference committees and Anaconda Copper Mining company officials prompts a vote by union members in Butte Anaconda and Great Falls. A 50 cent raise and closed shop are included with the terms, referendum to be held at evening meetings for member approval across the three cities.
Oakland Calif Sept 13 Fear that Louis Shaver 60 accused of beating and stabbing to death his 25 year old fortune telling wife might have taken his own life grew as the intensive hunt for the jobless cook entered its second day without results A rambling note purportedly signed by Shaver accused his wife of being unfaithful and expressed hope the three Shaver children would find a good home.
In Billings on September 13 Governor Frank H. Cooney and Republican nominee George M. Bourquin fired campaign salvos from 50 miles apart. Cooney accused Bourquin of kidding himself about a real race and criticized a former federal judge for collecting a $10,000 pension while seeking another $10,000 job.
Washington September 13 The drafting of margin and other regulations for governing the nation stock markets moved nearer the critical point. Financial leaders including Parker Gilbert of J P Morgan and company and Richard Whitney president of the New York Stock Exchange met during the day with the Federal Reserve board and chairman Joseph F Kennedy of the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Oklahoma City carpenters exposing a sealed wall during model home work found a kitten named Susie alive after five weeks. Workers described the cat as looking thin yet lively, surviving a long confinement in the wall.
Callander Ontario September 13 The famous Thonne quintuplets remain gravely ill from intestinal toxemia. Their physician Dr Dafoe said the danger continues as the children are so small any illness could prove fatal.
Geneva Sept 13 Poland curtly told the League of Nations it will have no further role in protecting political minorities. A large German minority lives within Poland's postwar boundaries, but Poland said minorities will receive no protection beyond its own laws guaranteeing religious and racial freedom. The Polish government had urged the league to extend minority rights through existing treaties to all members.
The government guide promotes a healthy, well balanced weekly and daily meal plan. The Washington Information Bureau sends copies for four cents to cover cost and handling. Enclose four cents with name, city and street for mailing to Washington, D. C.
William Lorimer former Illinois senator and GOP leader died in Chicago at the railway station after heart illness. He rose from immigrant roots to House member and senator but his career ended amid bribery charges and a later bank misappropriation case. acquittal came for Lorimer though partner Munday served part of a sentence.
Wellesley Massachusetts September 13 The duty of finding work for America's jobless today was placed upon employers not the government by Jesse H Jones chairman of the Reconstruction finance corporation The move aims to match unemployed men with available jobs through private sector action rather than public programs.
Bozeman hosts the Montana Federation of Women's Clubs four day convention with over 300 on day two. Grace Morrison Poole of Washington DC, national federation president, is honored at a dinner program. Poole crowned poet laureate C H Clapp of Missoula. In New York City early returns show Rep John J O Connor lagging James H Fay independent Democrat for a House seat while incumbent Republicans Bertrand Snell James W Wadsworth and Hamilton Fish Jr faced no opposition. The statewide results favored incumbents though full selections for U S senate governor lieutenant governor attorney general comptroller and other posts followed later.
Across the Pacific, shore and ship radio stations monitored distress signals from the Japanese steamer Tenzan Maru, 3122 tons, headed to Hongkong. Signals appeared in Continental code before shifting to unreadable Japanese characters, with decipherment uncertain.
General John J. Pershing, commander of America's World War I expeditionary force, marked his 74th birthday in Vittel France. He received hundreds of telegrams and letters but treated the day as ordinary while vacationing briefly at a Vosges mountain resort.
Kaifeng China Sept 13 The Yellow River roared through Honan and northern Hope provinces flooding a 30 mile wide bed and sweeping away flimsy dykes. Thousands of farmers climbed trees or fled to higher ground as drought scars darken crops. Reports say many perished as waters receded leaving farms under ten feet of flood.
The regular army waited for possible orders to reinforce about 2,000 Rhode Island National Guardsmen as violence subsided. In Woonsocket riots left two youths dead and several wounded after militia fire. Secretary of War George H. Dern said 2,000 troops could be rushed in if needed. Fort Devens recalled 600 troops from maneuvers, with Portland units also being recalled.
A telegram from the 78th annual I T U convention in Chicago asks President Roosevelt to stop the intervention of national troops and militia in the textile strike. It cites unbearable living conditions of textile workers and extends sympathy for their great struggle.
Washington reports President Roosevelt may cite an 80 case precedent list if federal troops are sent to Rhode Island to quell textile strike riots. Early instances trace to Shay's Rebellion 1786 87. Whiskey Rebellion 1794. Hoover 1932 in Washington DC. coal mine disorders 1921 in West Virginia.
Providence, Sept 13 AP Governor Theodore F Green sought federal troops to end strike terror in Rhode Island but the Democratic house caucus blocked the request. Roosevelt told him the army stood ready. The caucus approved bills to close mills in emergencies and to boost state police funds after violence in Woonsocket left seven wounded, two fatally.
Washington reports Democratic leaders express confidence in retaining the House as primary contests wind down across 48 states. Republicans forecast gaining 40 to 50 seats while the New Deal dominates campaign messaging. Maryland primaries boosted Gov Albert C. Ritchie and George L. Radcliffe for governor and senator respectively.
A spirited, fragmentary letter from Sept 18 praises Romania as a large, corn-rich country with a mountainous king and Queen Marie at the seashore. It notes hog farming, English speakers, and a roasting car. It mentions Senator Joe Robinson seen at the Vienna opera and suggests Democratic tensions.
Four senior officers of the rescue ship testified before a federal grand jury about delays in sending lifeboats to Morro Castle victims. They argued Captain Robert E. Carey caused delayed rescue by waiting 48 minutes after arrival. Carey defended the actions, noting two lifeboats were lowered as quickly as possible.
Okey Odell 38 leader of onion weeders and president of the Agriculture Workers union was indicted by the Hardin county grand jury on charges of pointing firearms and assault with intent to kill. He was arrested at his McGuffey home after a crowd seized him last August 26 while deputies questioned him, then returned to his home to fortify it amid armed supporters and angry demonstrators.
Col and Mrs Charles A Lindbergh made a forced landing on a northwest Oklahoma ranch after motor trouble. They were uninjured and enjoyed a chicken dinner. The plane sustained slight damage. This marked the second minor mishap of the week for the famous aviators, following a landing near Wichita.
Former Senator Alee Pomerene criticized President Roosevelt for halving the gold content of the dollar. He called the move unconstitutional and a seizure of private property, urging a stable currency and denying ties to the American Liberty League. He spoke to the Investment Hawks Association of America in Cincinnati.
