Berlin reports Adolf Hitler's high command claims a major German sea action sinks 22 ships totaling 134000 tons in a convoy bound for England. A German spokesman denounces Roosevelt as hypocritical, accuses him of war plans, and dismisses U S help to Britain as appeasement.
Hazelton Sept 12 A rank and file revolt against a United Mine Workers of America dues increase has halted production at 14 major anthracite collieries in Pennsylvania. About 10 000 miners protested a raise from 1 to 1 50 monthly and 2 to 6 annual assessments. Regional leaders urged return to work as Garret Miller condemned the move as a wedge to broader assessments. John L Lewis declined to comment. A Washington representative was sent for talks with regional officers.
Partly cloudy with occasional showers in the west and fair conditions in the east for Saturday and Sunday. Temperatures show little variation.
Washington reports the torpedoing of the 1700 ton American owned freighter Montana off Greenland. 26 crew members believed saved. Ship carrying 1,500,000 feet of lumber from US to Iceland. Attack occurred near where sister ship Bessa was sunk. Officials view as part of broader Nazi ocean domination plan.
Kalispell Sept 12 Senator Wheeler declares the president has announced a shooting war policy without Congress and uses national defense as a cover. He charges Roosevelt ordered the navy to fire on German or Italian submarines, warns of constitutional violations, and questions the sinking of ships Robin Moor and Seafarer. He laments Germany’s attacks on American vessels while opposing urgent steps toward war.

Atlanta reports Prof. J. E. McDaniel of Georgia Tech, a dollar a year appointee to the Office of Production Management, could only supply the government with eight and a half months of service last year. Today he received a paycheck for 71 cents from the Treasury Department.
Russians acknowledged an early retreat from Chernigov on the central front facing renewed German pressure aimed at looping toward Kiev. German forces struck southeast from Gomel through Chernigov, threatening to outflank Kiev while the Red Army defended routes to Uris and the Desna River. Far north, Baltic fleet units shelled German concentrations as warships reportedly sank two destroyers and other vessels in heavy seas.
German high command reported continued progress on the eastern front despite mud and bad weather. Hitler appealed for the winter relief fund, praising soldiers’ sacrifices and urging public backing. Front reports claim advances near Leningrad with heavy minefields and 6,700 mines cleared in two days. The Volkhov crossings faced heavy Russian losses, while south of the Dnieper the Luftwaffe targeted troop concentrations and rail lines, destroying 28 trains toward the Crimea.
Chairman Mrs. Kaiserman detailed interior modernization of St. Peter's Hospital. Four former storerooms will become beds, two rooms already decorated by Helena Methodist ladies, with funding needed to complete the project. The plan includes removing the central elevator shaft and adding four waiting rooms with davenports chairs and carpet.

The Lewis and Clark county draft board announced that fourteen Helena men will be called for army duty on October 9 to meet the month's county quota of 20. Names include George Kell Brown, Bernard Zimmerman, Raymond Winter, and others. East Helena, Crag, and Augusta contribute one man each. Additional previously registered or former county residents, including Robert Stack and Howard Schroeder, have also been ordered to report, with six reportedly registered in the July 1 roster.
