Japanese army and navy bombard Shanghai lines advancing two miles north of Shanghai from the Yangtze estuary. Chinese counterattacks reclaimed some ground as heavy reinforcements and fire from ships, planes, and field batteries tested the battle, one of the week’s fiercest. Continued on page 37.
Butte, Sept. 11. Two men and a woman were wounded in a love triangle incident that ended in death. Frank Yockery, 39, a miner, died instantly after being shot by rival suitor Merton Thedmond, 40, who was killed by a self inflicted wound minutes later at St. James hospital. Mrs. Ethel Redmond, 36, was seriously wounded and admitted to the hospital. Continued on Page 9.
Hyde Park Sept 11 President Roosevelt vowed to do all in his power to keep the United States from war. He told an outdoor Roos evelt Home club gathering that world tensions from the Far East and Europe make the tinder box description apt and that planning and resource conservation are essential to staying out of conflict. Bernard Baruch said Europe is a tinder box and warned anything can happen as he left the Whits Pense. The president spoke briefly after Rep Caroline O Day and others urged steps to avert war. Glendale Sept. 11. A small wedding took place at the Wee Kirk o’ the Heather with about 100 attendees. Charton Correll and Alyce Mederdes McLaughlin wed. Correll is radio partner of Freent Gosden, known as Amos and Andy.
In a dialogue the Found laments rising prices and criticizes Mr Montgomery from the Department of Agriculture, accusing government policy of boosting living costs. The Grouse counters, noting supply and demand laws and political maneuvering involving Senator Tydings, Secretary Wallace, and John Lewin as indicating a broader lobby and market manipulation. Chicago dated September 14 reports in the Unit article of aaries investigation that the Amerikadeutscher Volksbund seeks to align fascist elements in America with nazis. Newton Jenkins, Chicago lawyer and party advocate, led a band with black shirts and Ukrainian browns. Cooperation with the Russian National League of America is promised. Jenkins is a World War veteran and former candidate for the U S Senate and Chicago mayor.

Honeymooning Franklin D Roosevelt Jr arrives from New York to attend the wedding of Nicholas Midgley du Pont to Genevieve Livingston Kates in Jacksonville. The bridal party includes Mrs Eugena du Pont and Mrs Young Estee. The ceremony was performed by Bishop Frank A Juhan of the Episcopal Diocese.
Reporting from Vendaye on the Franco-Spanish frontier describes Insurgent General Francisco Franco’s forces pushing toward Gijon despite heavy rain hindering Asturian defenders. Muzucha peak fell, aiding the seaboard road capture, while the town of Relito changed hands after a long battle. Insurgent losses cited at 2,000 dead and 16,000 wounded in recent days. A Spokane marriage license lists Carl J Tarn and Beatrice Evjon of Missoula, Mont.

Nyon, Switzerland, Sept 11 delegates at the Nyon conference laid groundwork for a war to destruction against pirate submarines with a large Mediterranean destroyer fleet. Berryville Arkansas reports Florence Jackson, a four year old girl from Chelsea Oklahoma, who vanished during a family walk and endured four nights in the Ozarks. She described cold, hunger, and hiding in logs and trees as searchers, including about 700 hunters, scoured the area seven miles from the disappearance site. She remains under medical care with possible pneumonia risk.
