Mayor Mackey directs police to close every speakeasy gambling house and racketeers’ resort within a day. Forty five inspectors and captains report after a conference with Director Devin and Superintendent Mills as the mayor urges a thorough, real search of districts.
Northern Ohio labor leaders gathered at Geauga Lake to hear William Green, president of the American Federation of Labor, call for active participation in the forthcoming election. He stressed labor's potential political power and urged unified support for shaping the next Congress.
President and Mrs. Coolidge spent a subdued Labor Day at Cedar Island lodge as their son John prepared to depart to the great eastern cities. He had reservations for a train tonight to carry him away and start his independent life.
Old Faithful Inn Yellowstone Park Mont Sept 3 AP Montana and Wyoming bankers closed the first day of their annual convention with entertainment after two days of speeches by visitors. Tomorrow committees report on Wyoming taxation and Montana fee wards for dead bank bandits. Prone E Sisson of Guaranty and Trust Co New York told bankers that 1928 business conditions were strong and debtors becoming creditors.
Forty crew members of the rammed freighter Floridian were brought into Seattle aboard the Admiral Fiske, feeling lucky to be alive after a collision off the Washington coast Saturday. The Floridian suffered a large hull breach and flooded compartments and was believed sunk within hours, though salvage efforts continued.
In New York on September 3, an Interborough subway train stalled under the East River, smoke from a short circuited third rail caused panic. Scores of passengers fainted or were trampled, 43 treated at hospitals, others given on-site care. third system accident in 10 days.

In Chicago on Sept 3 a joint conference of 70,000 western railroad workers grappled with whether to strike or accept a peace plan over wage disparities. Officials of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen and the Order of Railroad Conductors favored peace, while a strike vote reportedly leaned toward action.

Injured are Mrs May Dodd of Los Angeles with possible brain concussion Mrs Katherine Wells of Long Beach with cuts and bruises Vivian Rowell of La Cresta California with multiple injuries Betty Lou Maswander four of Pasadena California with cuts and bruises to face and head.
The rescue of Bert asseil and Parker Cramer, Rockford aviators bound for Stockholm, from western Greenland's Arctic wastes dominates Labor Day news. After two weeks, a University of Michigan expedition team located them ten miles from their Greenland base at Mt Evange following a smoke signal, ending a wide search across Canada, the north Atlantic, and southern Greenland.
Senator Joe Robinson opened his vice presidential campaign addressing a Labor Day audience in Dallas. He defended Governor Smith against accusations of a whispering campaign, denounced White's retractions, and rejected claims of a priest rule, stressing Smith as an American governor.
In Utica Ontario Sept 3 a foul ball off a son in his first turn at bat struck spectator William Buerges causing fatal injuries. The incident occurred during a clash of semi pro teams drawing several hundred fans. Buerges died today from the blow to the left side.
The Association Against the Prohibition Amendment will send questionnaires on Prohibition to about 1,000 Republican and Democratic congressional hopefuls. President Henry H. Curran said responses will largely shape the association’s support for candidates who uphold its principles.
