Gov Alf Landon wrapped up a final campaign address in St Louis vowing restoration of good government and full recovery and reemployment. He accused the Democratic administration of broken promises, said 11,000,000 unemployed prove the need to return workers to jobs and stop financing politics from Washington. He spoke to a St Louis audience and on national radio, urging fiscal restraint and ending reliance on tomorrow’s income.

Members of the International Seamen's Union voted to call an immediate strike on their own initiative after officers opposing the proposal were overruled. The uproarious Cooper Union meeting led to evictions, as the vote aligned with efforts to back pacific coast marine workers, potentially triggering wider shipping disruptions nationwide.
In Rio de Janeiro on October 21 a dazzling air race sighted Germanys two famed airships the Hindenburg and Graf Zeppelin approaching each other mid Atlantic. Passengers aboard the Zoppeling Hindenburg and Graf Zeppelin exchanged greetings as the silver giants paused beneath a bright moon.
Ironwood Mich Oct 31 seven men and a boy drowned when a motorboat capsized half a mile from shore. A rescue boat overturned leaving four others missing. Mrs Oscar Menricke rowed to help and five men clambered aboard but it capsized again. Rescued were three survivors including one motorboat occupant. Victims include Art Pulholm James Halama Frank Halman James Halama Jr Jacob Halama Stanley Cory Lawrence Petrusha and others.
With two days to go before election day, Grover Cisel, Democratic state leader, forecast Roosevelt would win Montana by at least 65,000 votes, 15,000 more than four years ago, and Ayers would carry Billings and Cascade county by substantial margins. He predicted Ayers would carry 55 of 56 counties. Speakers in Missoula rallied for Roosevelt and Democratic candidates Murray and Ayers, despite rain and illness limiting some participation.
In Gorvallis Oregon State stunned Montana with a 44 to 7 victory for their first conference win. A 102 yard run by Popovich highlighted the second quarter as Montana briefly tied the game. Koleberg intercepted a pass and set up a short scoring drive for Oregon State.
Madras India Oct 21 reports say a tornado swept through the Madras province killing about 100 people when a tobacco depot collapsed at Gun Tur. Sixty two died at Chirala and 16 000 were left homeless. The storm occurred yesterday.
In Toronto the late Charles Vahee Millar’s derby prize of 500000 is claimed by six mothers whose babies allegedly tied for the fortune. After Millar’s death, the mothers contend their child’s claim stands, with two exceptions noted. The outcome hinges on Clause 9 and substantiation of each claim.
Edmonton October 41 Premier William Aberhart announced the province will default on a bond issue of 1,250,000 due tomorrow. Principal will not be paid, but interest at 3 percent will be continued, he said.
Santa Monica columnist Irvin Cobr recounts Napoleon brandy lore noting age, bottle markings, and cobweb decor. He muses on collectors of relics from Jesse James and Billy the Kid, seeking authentic handcuffs and affidavits, amid humorous anecdotes of nightlife in New York and garage-sale style finds.
Payne Templeton, superintendent of Helena public schools, reviewed the seven plank platform at the closing session of the three day Southwestern district convention. He urged continual improvements in education and proposed a property replacement tax to fund 50 percent of costs, retirement allowances for teachers, administrative reorganization, and programs for health and exceptional children. The convention was the 47th in Montana and next year’s site will be chosen by the association’s executive council.
Alfred E. Smith, Democratic presidential candidate, blasted New Deal policies as retarding recovery and assailed Roosevelt and other leaders for alliances with Farmer Labor and American Labor parties. He warned that somebody will be double crossed as he spoke in Albany, citing Ridney Hillman of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers.
Hollywood scene reports Houdini failed to appear at a public seance on the tenth anniversary of his death. His widow Hille Beatrice Houdini sobbed as the crowd listened for a sign that never came. In New York Theo Harden also tried to reach Houdini through a medium but pronounced the attempt unsuccessful.

President Roosevelt swung into a closing rally in Madison Square Garden delivering his “answer” to critics and urging a continued fight for the New Deal. He framed the 1938 election as a continuation of the 1934 triumph, asserting the American people are in a mood to win and will preserve their victory against “government by organized money.” He criticized past Republican administrations and set the campaign issue as sustaining the New Deal’s reforms.
New York desk reports Father Coughlin, in a Saturday radio broadcast, apologized for calling President Roosevelt a scab and for remarks about the WPA. He sought to close the campaign and said he regretted any hurt caused. The issue had stirred reactions from the Vatican and Detroit church authorities amid disagreements over governance and labor wordings.

Salt Lake City reports former President Herbert Hoover says he is not Likely to seek office again and that at his age and with his fishing interests the idea isn't worth a passing thought. He plans to meet Mrs Hoover in Elko Nevada then travel to Lake Tahoe and San Jane where he will speak Monday. He adds Republicans are sure to win and notes rising sentiment for the Grand Party since October.
