American troops push Japanese forces on Attu island into a compact highland stronghold near Chichagof harbor. The victory on Fishhook ridge and fighting above the clouds signal the collapse of Japan’s foothold, with operations aimed at neutralizing Mat-kiska following.
London newspapers speculate on a European invasion as imminent with one daring that the greatest naval operation in history is underway. Rome radio and Italian broadcasts suggest targets include Pantelleria, Sicily and Sardinia and warn that invasion plans may be imminent.

The largest American bomber force ever staged from Britain attacked three French targets St Nazaire Rennes and La Pallice using 2000 pound bombs. RAF night force joined heavy raids as Allied air power intensified in Europe. The light and heavy bomber tally included 13 bombers lost with clear bullseye hits reported.
Allied air forces extended the margin of safety in the Southwest Pacific by sending Liberator bombers more than 4,000 miles from Australia to strike three islands in the Smith group and targets near Lombok and Banda Sea. A Dutch convoy near New Guinea was stalked and attacked, with two Japanese light craft shot down during reconnaissance and coastal strafing missions.
London reports that Soviet forces forced German Kuban troops to adopt elastic warfare after last winter’s retreat in Russia. Moscow offered little detail, while Japanese and Allied air efforts press German positions. In Montana, Bert Sloate, 21, of Billings, died in a Civil Aeronautics Authority war training crash. a student survived.
The Associated Press notes stringent gasoline limits and many men and women in service reduced fatalities during the second World War Memorial Day weekend. By last night 45 deaths were tallied, 21 from automobile accidents, with several states already reporting no fatal crashes. Southern centers logged one traffic death in Tennessee since midnight Friday. The National Safety Council projected the three day toll could reach around 280 if curtailment holds and war plants run Monday.
Washington May 29. The Office of Price Administration announced a 5 cent subsidy on butter to take effect next Tuesday with retail prices rising in June. The subsidy applies to newly produced butter, creating a lag before price cuts show in stores. OPA also signaled a 10 percent subsidy for coffee and meat to follow within days.

Washington May 20 The battered Italian fleet, still formidable, could be used to block or threaten an Allied invasion in the Mediterranean. If controlled by German officers it could resist a British American assault. if Italians retain control it could serve as leverage in bargaining. London observers warn fleet units would become sitting ducks for land based planes as the Mediterranean campaign advances.
The misspelled report notes the crest of the Mississippi rolled southward, signaling the worst flood danger subsiding. It warns that unseen waters may return to the Midwest, where deaths, millions in damage, and crop devastation were reported, with areas near Heardstown, Cape Girardeau, and Cairo cited as critical.
Washington May 29 The commerce department predicted a postwar building boom after the war with an immediate demand for 4 000 000 to 4 500 000 family dwelling units nationwide due to the virtual elimination of private residential construction during the war. Eric A Johnston head of the United States Chamber of Commerce said all construction branches and allied interests would unite on a program to supplement and implement postwar planning of individual firms.
Aviation Chief Metal smith Robert Heryant of Salt Lake City fashioned a palm tree from salvaged tin sheets and iron pipes, wrapping burlap and painting it white and green. The improvised palm tree was built to cheer Floridian crew members aboard after Bryant discovered a barren area months earlier.
The Associated Press reports the United Nations pressed a two phase campaign against Axis power with air and psychological warfare. Allied bombings continued relentlessly as invasion plans for Italy intensified, while Germany faced crippling strikes at the core of its war industry.
Washington May 29 The new office of war mobilization led by Jones Byrnes began preliminary organization and will meet President Roosevelt mid next week. The six man economic high command will review factors hindering the fight against inflation and may outline new controls. Byrnes sworn in as war mobilization director and Fred Vinson succeeds as economic stabilization director.
Memphis May 25. Joe Vaccaro reportedly shot down a Messerschmitt while serving as bomber gunner. His mother Mrs L Vaccaro said she learned from AP dispatch that he kept his flying secret, noting pride in his son's mechanic skills and hopes he continues doing well.
