Chinese forces claim to have repelled a major Japanese drive near Kinhwa in Chekiang province, with 8,400 Japanese casualties and a warned rise in fighting to come. Chinese and Japanese claims differ over the city’s status as the battle continues, with reports of further offensives planned toward Fushien province and surrounding areas.
David Richardson and Taien Young lead the 1942 Helena high school senior class as valedictorian and salutatorian per The Vigilance yearbook. Richardson, son of Mrs. Ethel Richardson of East Helena, serves as president of the senior class, with four years at Helena High noted for outstanding scholastic achievement.
Outstanding in musical and extra curricular. He is also elect manager of The Nugget, a member of the 3-7-77, the honor society, the Boys' Club, the Forensic league and the Vigilante staff. Miss Young is daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ingval Young of 95 North Ewing street. In addition to editor-in-chief of The Nugget and Vigilante staff, she has served as secretary of the student body, member of the student honor su board, of the national honor to the girls' H club and the 7-17 club. Editor of this year's annual which is attractively bound in red leather, is Don McCutcheon. Other staff: Jean Berg coeditor and Bette Parker art editor. Others include Barbara Love aren, Harper Jones, David Richardson, Mary Lou Vitre, Betty Clampitt, Verna Brackman, Bob Maras, Shirley Tuohy, Pat Gagle, Leia Ashton, Jim Louquet, Helen Watson, Barbara Hanley, Phyllis Shupe, Hank Sherlock, Pat Young, Suzanne Hinman, Berna Brackman, LaVerne Trausr and Dorothy Angstman.
London May 26. Top U S ranking strategists at allied headquarters fuel belief of a land sea and air push to prevent Hitler from concentrating power on Russia. General Arnold leads a mission with Rear Admiral Towers and Generals Eisenhower and Clark to prepare the fastest means to mobilize land forces for a preemptive blow, prioritizing airpower to seize Germany’s war capacity.
Washington May 26 The Office Price Administration classified three Berky Mountain areas as defense districts to curb rent increases in war production and military camps. Areas include Anaconda Mant Deer Lodge and Box Elder and Cache Caspar Wy Natrona counties, populations listed. Price Administrator Leon Henderson urges rents reduced to March 1 levels with a 60 day adjustment period.
Sam C. Ford approved Broadwater county sugar beet growers request for 68 Japanese evacuee laborers with 100 expected ultimately to work in the beet fields this spring. Gov Ford signed requests for 185 for Yale county 530 for Blaine county and 195 for Phillips county. Requests go to the federal war relocation authority for final approval. It should take about a week to bring the laborers to Montana.
Allied Headquarters reported on May 27 that Allied planes destroyed three of 16 Japanese fighters over New Guinea Island in a sharp aerial combat. One Allied fighter was lost. In New Delhi, Gandhi faced resistance as Nehru visited Wardha amid concerns over non-violent policy demands during the Japanese invasion.
Premier Hideki Tojo told a special session of the Japanese diet that naval forces in defense of Australia have disappeared and warned Australia to reconsider its attitude or suffer the consequences. He cited the Coral Sea battle as leaving Australia defenseless before the Japanese onslaught.
A U S destroyer Blakeley was torpedoed near Martinique while negotiating island status. Ten crewmen are missing and six injured, yet the ship reached Fort de France under its own power. The submarine’s identity is unknown, and the incident marks a sharp rise in Caribbean sea warfare with German and Italian subs active nearby.
The 5th annual Montana Stockgrowers convention opens tomorrow in Missoula with headquarters set at the Hotel Florente. Secretary Rh. A. Phillips expects about 1000 attendees. Sessions run Wednesday through Friday with addresses by Dr W. Z. Butler and a Thursday banquet featuring attorney WLIT Toover of Butte.
Montana Navy recruits from Helene, Misoula, Great Falls, Billings and Ruth gather for a public oath of allegiance on the state capitol steps shortly after 11 AM. Lt. John V. Bieller administers the oath as Gov. Clark Port witnesses and speaks. The 15 enrollees will board the 2:20 PM train to San Diego for a three week Navy base stay before classification and assignment.
Washington May 25 The bureau of naval personnel authorized enlistment of 10000 additional college juniors and seniors and graduates for reserve midshipman training. Enlistees undergo indoctrination at Notre Dame or Northwestern universities, then three months training aboard the U S S Prairie State or a receiving ship in New York before commissioning as ensigns in the naval reserve.
The Helena forecast from the U S Weather Bureau calls for thunder showers on Wednesday with little change in temperature. Local authorities urge readers to stay aware of changing conditions and prepare for possible brief rain bursts.
London reports from Europe say Hitler is pressing France to pressure Laval into allowing German ships to train at Toulon. Mussolini has pressed Laval on Corsica and Nice while Tunisia and Libya bases loom as Axis interests grow. Italy and Britain weigh the risk as the French fleet potential shifts raise Mediterranean stakes.
Moscow reports May 27 shows Marshal Timoshenko’s forces solidifying gains on the Kharkov front after a westward drive and renewed Red Army resistance in the south. Soviet communique counts 332 German planes destroyed against 127 Soviet losses in the May 17 22 period, with aerial combat easing Monday as 11 Nazi and eight Soviet aircraft fell.
Washington May 26 The civil aeronautics board ordered temporary suspension of air transport service at 25 cities to maximize remaining service from limited aircraft. Disruptions include Aberdeen and Bismarck in North Dakota Helena Montana Lincoln Nebraska Minot North Dakota and other mid‑continent points. Additional routes such as Continental Air Lines Pueblo Colorado to Tulsa Oklahoma Inland Air Lines Cheyenne Wyoming to Huron South Dakota were paused between terminals and intermediate points.
The Montana Board of Railroad Commissioners telegraphed to Leon Henderson, federal price administrator, opposing proposed statewide gasoline rationing. Chairman Austin B. Middleton and Commissioners Horace F. Casey and Laul T. Smith cited long distances, mining and farming needs, and vital war industries as factors that would suffer. They urged reliance on truck transportation and warned rationing could hinder oil, mining, and copper smelting operations critical to the war effort.
Washington May 26 The United States today communicated to Soviet Russia the draft of a proposed lend lease agreement between the two nations The proposal was handed to Soviet Ambassador Maxim Litvinoff by Secretary of State Hull in a demiine conference Other matters were discussed It was learned that the aim was to bring lend lease with Russia in line with agreements already reached with Great Britain and other United Nations The President said Russia was being placed on the same basis as Britain and the United States in post war efforts to restore world trade and payment terms would be arranged to avoid burdening world commerce tied to the Anglo American lend lease agreement announced last February
H G O Rourke of Helena prominent local businessman and 39 year resident died at St Johns hospital after long illness. Born in Green Bay Wisconsin in 1854 he came to Helena with parents and worked as a bookkeeper for Benson Carpenter co later owning and managing the institution he led at his death.
