Allied headquarters reported heavy losses for Japanese aircraft on the ground at a New Britain airfield. Twenty bombs hit a group of 20 enemy planes, setting many ablaze and burning an airfield building. One Allied plane was lost amid strong antiaircraft fire.
In Honesdale Pennsylvania the flood toll rose with at least 29 dead and many missing after a wall of water from a 4 1 mountain stream swept through the Susquehanna Lehigh and Lackawanna watershed Friday into Saturday. Dozens of homes were destroyed or washed away, with scenes of beds and furniture lodged in mud. The government has drawn more than 24.0 billion in cash while redeeming and refunding about 7.0 billion, yielding a volatile turnover in the market.
Sir Arthur M. Murphy delivered a stirring commencement address on Design for Peace at Carroll College. Seniors received degrees and awards were given for notable achievements as the college announced a wartime program initiating a four year aeronautical engineering degree jointly with the Montana School of Aeronautics and Related Trades to serve the northwest. Morning service at St Helena Cathedral featured Rev J Bruce Plummer on Christianity facing modernism and secular trends.
Budd J. Greenwell about 45 and Mrs Let Fanyack about 22 of Butte drowned in Willow Creek Lake five miles east of Harrison during a morning storm today. Sheriff Lloyd Brook and Coroner O J Olson of Sheridan investigated the accident, the first tragedy of Montana's one day fishing season. Mrs Fanyack’s body was recovered about 2 pm, four hours after the accident. Greenwell’s body was still being sought tonight as searchers including Mrs Fanyack’s husband pressed on.
Brigadier General James Doolittle stated in an Army hour broadcast that besides Tokyo other targets of Japanese and German origin would be bombed. He credited the raid's success to the best planes in the world and noted Japanese pursuit ships offered little challenge. He spoke from a radio cast transmitted via War Department channels.

Washington May 24 More than 250 persons were killed in the United States this spring by natural disasters, the American Red Cross reported In a recap It was the most devastating combination of disasters in its 61 years of relief Norman H Davie said. In addition to upwards of 250 killed 2 300 persons were seriously injured and 7 000 families affected many of them made homeless. Spring disasters included tornadoes cloudbursts ice rains floods and forest fires. Relief and rehabilitation work will cost the Red Cross more than 1 000 000.
