Willard Morton alias Halph Giabau, known as the phantom burglar, was sentenced to three to ten years in prison as an habitual criminal. Prosecutors said he burglarized Bel Air homes of celebrities, eluding arrest for five years while the loot, including jewelry and furs worth well over a million dollars, accumulated. He admitted prior prison terms in Pennsylvania Arizona and New Jersey and claimed he was unarmed during the burglaries in the Del Ate district.
New York May 13 A subpoena directed band leader K Frits Kubp to appear before the grand jury Monday as part of a two ply inquiry by District Attorney Thomas B Dewey into alleged band salad tax evasion and related felonies. Kubp said there was no need to serve a subpoena on him.
