A massive fire swept five grain elevators in Chicago causing more than 3 million dollars in damage and trapping workers. Firefighters battled the blaze for five hours with 490 men, as a dense heat filled the area around the Rosenbane Brothers grain complex.
Butte Lutheran Church hosts a concert Sunday featuring a 35 member choir from the Basunist Laitheras, Bartte, with Bartte pastor Ter, and Al Murller, former remdral of Hel eax. Mrs. William Anderson of Butte Helopa McClatcher will accompany, and St. Jom's organist McClatcher assists. The program includes three pieces from the St Olaf series by F Mellam Chrie danren.
Harrisburg May 11. David Milsner a 79 year old tobacco planter and Miss Mary Collins 72 both of Lancaster applied for a marriage license. The application noted Milsner has been married previously.
Washington May 14 Retired General Rivers Maj Gem Willan CO Rivers urged adoption of a constant amendment requiring a referendum of the people before the United States sends troops abroad He pressed the need for trained diplomats and careful deliberation before entering war Several witnesses testified in support including Vin Charles C Spanistl a Fordham University professor of American history who praised the proposal as a restraint on presidents rash actions.
Washington May 11 The Senate blocked consideration of the 1 218 billion farm bill after extensive speeches. Majority Leader Mumrell said the chamber should finish votes on the measure tomorrow after a vote on amendments.
Washington, May 11. Affidavits allege Workers Alliance coerced workers and aided strikes on WPA projects in Tennessee. Treasury engineers testified that WPA labor and materials funded private driveways and roads, with sponsorships forged for Nashville projects. Investigators cited agitation and violence plans and a forged company renting equipment to WPA, while defense claimed broad use of WPA purchases for state projects.
Secretary Morgenthau presses for tax reform as he avoids public detail during the Ways and Means hearings. He signals a broad revision stance while stressing decisions will await presidential guidance and congressional debate.
Contractors will set bids on seven road and bridge projects across several counties in Montana. Projects include grading and drainage work on Durby-Brandys road, surface work on Roundup to Mussel Shell routes, and construction of several timber trestle bridges on Columbus Rapelje, Butte Boulder, Philipsburg-Blackaho, and other routes. A second setting is planned for Helena on May 26.
Misoula May 11 Clara Maren McLeod of Missoula won the girls speaking title while Ronald Kidd of Joplin took the boys’ declamatory contest at the 36th interscholastic track meet held on the University campus. The girls’ standings list Genovinoa Mcdonald and Anneanda in second and Charlotta Yeager third with Kathleen Chilcoit and Margaret Conway among others noted.
Report from Berlin notes Prime Minister Chamberlain pledged Britain would defend Polish independence in the Danzig dispute, but Nazi quarters dismissed the stand as interesting yet ineffective. Officials expect little change from diplomatic talks and warned against committing to further steps. General praise for Italy’s arms was noted as allies looked to avoid war.
The National Labor Relations Board and the American Federation of Labor announced they could not reach an agreement on proposed amendments to the National Labor Relations Act after several conferences. Nebraska Sheriff W. W. Behulg rushed through a hail of bullets to rescue 14 month old Jimmy Silver from a crazed man in a farmhouse standoff. After eight hours of terror, the infant was freed as deputies and state highway patrol surrounded the home. The suspect, Jaman W. Sulcer, killed himself following a gas attack and a final volley. Mrs. Ittehard Korte and two other Keefe children were wounded as the siege ended.

In Denver on May Day the Colorado Senate acquitted President Woman C Getty on impeachment articles passed by the House. Immediately after the acquittal, Prosecution Counsel Haymond L Sauter signaled he would pursue Mrs Clara Wilkins. The trial featured testimony from two witnesses as Getty faced three counts.
Roman May 21 Twenty fishermen were lost at sea after a collision in the North Atlantic between two Gloucester boats. The Roatan fishing schooner Isabelle Parker and Kadith C. Kote reportedly sank near Yarmouth, about 100 miles south of Capes Selig and 160 miles northeast of Boston. Nine survivors were picked up by two tugs miles west of Yarmouth and taken to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. Continued on Page 31.
New York May 11. Louis Greenfield, who killed his 16 year old son Hermbert to end his suffering, was acquitted of the first degree manslaughter charge by a Browa county court jury. Doctors testified the boy’s condition was hopeless and a chloroform death was chosen after lengthy deliberation. Greenfield sobbed as he told the court the boy’s mind had progressed beyond cure and feared attack by him. The jury deliberated four hours.
New York May 11 government spokesman said soft coal operators and United Mine Workers may reach an agreement by 7 a.m. tomorrow to settle the Appalachian bituminous deadlock. An operators' spokesman said a large block of the tonnage has already reached a national sector agreement with the miners, with a remaining obstacle from southern operators opposing the union shop demand. The stoppage began when the agreement expired April 8 and left nearly half a million miners idle. Government officials noted both sides may sign contracts only after districts or associations agree. The union president authorized districts outside the Battle Appalachian center to begin signing with operators not opposed to the union shop. The Appalachian operators conference covers 336,000 idle miners operating under the unanimity rule. Continued on Page 2.
St Louis May 11. Joan Barrymore faced a charge of issuing a bad check connected to hotel bills, with Prosecutor Maurer Atughin saying the warrant was issued after a $434.29 check from the actor bounced. An aide stated the matter was a mistake and being amicably settled, with the hotel seeking no public action.
Baltimore reporter details a spectacular fire at a 300-foot pier and warehouse housing 1,800 tons of imported material. Twelve firefighters were injured when a wall collapsed, with damage not yet estimated.
Paris May 11 Premier Daladier told parliament France will keep allies and reinforce its army unless neighbors curb military preparations. The warning targets Germany and Italy as Paris asserts a strong national defense. President Lebrun and Daladier urged steadfast measures and adherence to international law, praising Roosevelt’s peace stance.
