A tornado swept through farming areas east of Brownwood Tennessee and nearby counties causing multiple deaths and many injuries. Property damage reported across Overton and adjoining counties with reinforced sections of the region affected as responders assess the devastation.
In Buenos Aires May 10 film star Rae Torres 28-year-old Mina Torres reports she attended no dinner Monday with Argentine actor Vega. Police say Vega tried to kidnap her, beating her, and she escaped to a neighbor’s home after dawn. The incident prompted local authorities to investigate.

In Missoula on May 10 at the State University theater, six entrants competed for the best actress award with the top honor going to Chekas Thi Maveage Prapowl from Kal Hole here. Mamillan High school and Helena High also earned high placements in a statewide competition with multiple schools entered. Sarah Mande Noere received the evening’s top honor for her performance, while fifteen tribal schools entered the finals.

New York marchers estimated at up to 5,000 moved from Madison Square to Battery in a protests against Nazi Germany. The three mile route drew enthusiastic but orderly crowds despite instruction, with units lining up at the start as General John F. O’Ryan led the vanguard. In Chicago more than 40,000 people joined a mass meeting to denounce the Hitler regime.
Washington May 10 The White House announced tonight that reductions in payments to veterans with service connected disabilities would be reviewed to make cuts less severe. Budget Director Douglas, and the director of the budget Farix outlined changes after debate in the House. The action reduces outlay for the veterans administration and effects pensions, hospitals, and compensation among other items. Leaders criticized the cuts as drastic and promised further action.
Washington police moved to prevent repeats of last year as the 1090 or so veterans faced eviction from a camp near the Capitol. Inspector Headley ordered evacuation within 24 hours over sanitary concerns while some veterans blamed leaders and factions. Fort Hunt in Virginia was arranged as shelter as agents guarded properties and allowed limited movement.
Chicago May 11 A report to police says Charles W McCoy president of the United Char dealers association was ambushed by several men who fired at him as he returned from a meeting. The attack coincided with a teamsters strike that closed 200 Chicago coal yards and federal state and city officials moved to break the grip of a tracking and transportation agency over the retail coal business.
Washington May 10 AP A hinge moment in Congress as Democratic insurgents fail to derail the party’s stance on anti trust reform. Led by Representative Shannon the 29 breakaway members withdraw after a brief clash over proposed suspensions, while House leaders and President Roosevelt are praised for loyalty. McFarlane argues farm relief inflation pressures will force a presidential signature and railroad and industry control plans threaten anti trust laws, with a quorum crisis of 140 of 413 Democrats noted in the chamber.
Newport Arkansas May 10 AP An Arkansas couple Ransom Crawford 37 and his wife 17 were in custody after their arrest near their home on murder charges. The Crawford family is accused of poisoning Walter Tallies and three children on the Cayenne Ford farm, with the deaths stated as results of poisoning by infusions.
A truck driven by Harvey Tapley was struck by a freight train in Waynoka Oklahoma. The impact tore the vehicle 200 yards along the track, igniting 1,700 gallons of gasoline and kerosene. Tapley survived with injuries described as minor cuts and bruises, awakening after the crash to a miraculous escape. Five freight cars were damaged.
Great Falls May 10 The Montana senator R B Wheeler telegrammed Charles Brazier of Helena secretary of the Montana Silver association calling for broader support of silver. Wheeler said eastern opposition blocks real silver legislation and urged favoring President Roosevelt against any fixed gold silver ratio to spur silver adoption and restore silver in the monetary system, arguing this would boost employment.
Washington May 10 The farm relief and inflation bill, hailed as a major price-lifting measure, was approved by both houses and awaits routine signatures. Department of Agriculture reports the lowest winter wheat crop since 1914 and the smallest production in 29 years, highlighting constrained surpluses and a pivotal shift in agricultural policy amid efforts to spur prosperity.
Washington May 10 President Roosevelt stated the United States should forego an import tax on major agricultural production for the present. He indicated there may be no need to apply taxes before June 12 when the truce expires. He suggested a new tariff truce to last through the world economic conference period.
Philadelphia reports a well authenticated rumor that President Roosevelt plans a bold Atlantic crossing next month in a 10,000 ton cruiser Indianapolis. Navy officers at the Philadelphia navy yard are said to be preparing the cruiser for the record crossing, though no official confirmation of attendance at the World Economic Conference is given.
Spain announced the strike ended at midnight across the country after two days of intermittent violence. Police reported roughly 1,000 arrests in Madrid and other areas as authorities kept a fire ban against convents and churches. Two bombs damaged sites in Lugo, while police prevented further attacks on convents in other towns.
