Dazed residents in a northeast English town, likely Mull, sift through ruins after a German air raid scarred homes and shops. Fire crews work ceaselessly to control blazes and reach buried victims while hospitals report serious hits and plasma supplies arrive for transfusions.
British ambassador Lord Halifax warned that Germanys domination of 164 million people harbors the seeds of its destruction. He spoke in Chicago praising Allied resolve, noting Axis powers total populations and urging swift American aid while reporting on Middle East air and ground actions and Iraqi upheavals.
Lan C Ford will receive an honor from the National Safety Council for Montana highway safety in 1910. The ceremony occurs at Helena High School auditorium at 4 30 o'clock in the morning with speakers Col Sheridan and William Ireland and officials from the safety council. Public invited.
The body of Leonard Henry Krook a 40 year old farmer from Boyd was found hanging from a tree in a field. Relatives had searched for him since Wednesday morning. Ross Martin who pronounced the case a death by own action said Krook’s family reported he was despondent.
The War Department announced plans for war games involving a record total of more than 350000 troops, with 16.5 million men aged 21 to 35 signed for potential training. May 24 exercises in California lead to a September climactic clash between the 2nd and 3rd field armies in Louisiana. Officials estimate total forces in mobilization training to involve over 800 soldiers in non field roles, as the six month field program uses 1,302,400 officers and men across regular, national guard, selective service trainers, and reserve components.
At Ford Motor Rouge and Lincoln plants in Detroit an election is ordered to choose a single bargaining agent for about 300 production and maintenance workers. The UAW-CIO and AFL unions vie, with public rallies and extensive campaigning planned ahead of May 21 votes. Union leaders claim victory while Labor Board officials note the scale is historically large.
The British government and the maritime commission corrected an impression that April shipping losses were minor. London reports near 460,000 tons lost in April, close to the 464,000 tons in June 1940. Admiral Land said earlier estimates were incomplete and may understate actual sinkings, while senate and convoys debates continue amid conflicting figures.

A 68-year-old carpenter who told state police two men planted dynamite on President Roosevelt's Hyde Park estate admitted his report was false. Trooper Henry Windt said the man confessed he made the claim to spur police action against perceived fifth columnists.

Five hundred Helena women start circulating petitions to resubmit a 1 160,900 school bond issue to replace Broadwater Jefferson and Emerson structures. Campaign chairwoman Mrs. BR H Gagle says aim is June 2 or 8 election and 1,000 signatures must be collected by Monday. Taxpayers urged to check voter registrations. Helena Parent-Teacher council will place petitions in local businesses as the school board meets this afternoon.
Tokyo May 9. French Indo China and Thailand signed a peace treaty and three protocols in a ceremony described by French Ambassador Charles Arsene Henry as a peace making act for Foreign Minister Yosuke Matsuoka. The accord, mediated by Japan, requires future disputes to go to Japan mediation and sets Thailand to pay Indo China 6 000 jeoo piagtres for ceded territory.
Representative O'Connor of Montana introduced House bill 4689 to authorize an appropriation of 590000 dollars for constructing a highway bridge across the Missouri river near Frazer Montana. The action was announced from Washington on May 8.
Capt James Roosevelt, reporting for the U S Marine Corps, said German airmen were flying American made planes as part of the air war against Britain. He arrived in Basra Iraq to observe the Near East theater, noting sporadic street firing but limited resistance. He urged the United States to aid Britain by deploying troops to relieve pressure and by ensuring supply routes are secured.
German raiders hit Britain with clocklike regularity, blasting British port areas and the Midlands. Britain claimed 39 Nazi planes downed in the 24 hours ending last midnight, with raids reaching the south coast of Northern Ireland.
A single engine biplane crashed during takeoff at Washington airport injuring Captain Alberto Taborca and killing Captain Rafael Suarez Rivas. Witnesses said the craft stalled after liftoff and plunged to the ground, with flames enveloping the wreck and onlookers gathering at the scene. Dr Louis Fernandes Guadallo, on hand to greet the visitors, said Suarez Rivas died in the blaze while the injured officer was taken to hospital.
