Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels said during a visit to Scapa Flow that the German navy should be sunk to set a moral example. He argued ships have no value for Allied naval aims and favored ceremonies with bands and flags as ships go to the bottom.
Treasury officials express a bit of concern over two weeks of the Fourth Liberty loan campaign with only $1,657,979,000 subscribed, 36.84 percent of the $4.5 billion goal. Individuals buying Victory notes offer hope while banks and big corporations show low participation.
Announcement by George L. Ramsey of the Banking Corporation of Montana in Helena under the Federal Farm Loan act. The Montana Joint Stock Land Bank is chartered with a $250000 paid capital and government oversight. It will take over farm loan business, offers 6 percent net loans on improved farms with no commissions. Loans amortize in 33 years via semi annual payments. farmers may pay on principal.
American financial delegates in Paris reject a joint effort to rehabilitate Germany’s commerce. Britain proposed a 35 billion mark bond issue with Britain France the United States and others as guarantors. The United States opposes the plan and refuses to participate.
Mrs Irene Castle widow of Captain Vernon Castle wed Captain Robert E Treman of Ithaca New York at the Little Church Around the Corner. She leaves professional dancing to continue as a moving picture actress. Treman’s father is deputy governor of the Federal Reserve Bank in New York. Vernon Castle died in a 1918 flight accident at Fort Worth Texas.
Washington May 3 Special Seventy one Montana men died in action with the Seventy Seventh division a unit widely credited to New York. The division total battle deaths reached 1646 with 969 New York men and 677 from other states. An Helena Independent report noted Montana’s role was not fully credited and no complete census of citizens by state is available to verify claims of overlooked decorations.
Park county completed its 300000 Victory loan allotment late last night. In all, 24 Montana counties have subscribed to about 50 percent of the Victory loan units. Mineral Custer Powder River and Fallon counties reported reaching their totals, with Mineral noting 30000 and Fallon 35000 subs.
Sheriff George Huffaker and deputies arrested Charles Gabisch Carrie Kinney Harry Marmon and Carl J Clark on warrants charging sales of intoxicating liquor in violation of the state dry statute. Bonds were set at 500 each and Kinney and Harmon were previously jailed on liquor selling charges. Confiscated were bottled goods including whiskey beer gin and wine. A small amount of intoxicants was found at Gabisch's place.
First Class Sergeant William L. Edison, son of Thomas A. Edison, arrived aboard the liner General Goethals with tank corps replacements. He says early large tanks were too slow and "veritable death traps" for the ten occupants and were unsatisfactory next to the Whipper type.
At a Helena Associated Industries division meeting last night the plea for higher wage scales from Helena Building and Trades council sections was debated. Members cited flat living costs since the armistice and falling staple prices, arguing no immediate need for raises. They favored proceeding with building work to create jobs, despite rising labor costs.
Eighteen members of the Allied Veterans band stranded in Helena face unpaid salaries for four weeks and lack funds for transport to Vancouver British Columbia or Portland Oregon. The group, once 38 strong, began January 19 from Portland under Ellison White management and now seeks relief from back pay and travel arrangements. Captain Jack Carter, an actor, travels with the unit and has a Portland wife. he criticizes the situation amid veterans’ hardships.
London May 3. The air ministry states that the top British ace of the war is the late Major Edward Mannock with 73 enemy aircraft downed. Lieut. Col. William A. Bishop of Canada is next with 72. Among all allies, Lieut. Rene Fonck of France holds the overall record at 75.
Associated Press reports on May 4 that Employment Sunday will be observed in churches across the country tomorrow, urging congregations to promote work opportunities and aid the unemployed amid ongoing economic strain.
Regular automobile service planned between Yellowstone and Glacier parks set to start June 20 if Gallatin and Park counties repair roads to permit heavy passenger cars. Route via Gardiner to Livingston cited as worst section. Boulder route praised as best. Congratulates Lewis and Clark and Jefferson counties for strong highways as preparations continue. Continuous service will run from park opening to closing pending road upgrades.
At a meeting the Helena Country Club advanced plans for a modern clubhouse and golf course. The club holds an option expiring May 21 on 120 acres including a granite building at Main Place Ten-Mile across Colorado gulch. A bond issue of 10,000 dollars is proposed to finance purchase and construction, with 4000 dollars already sold.
Paris reports thwarted attempt to assassinate Premier Clemenceau. A 19 year old named Cornillon was arrested near Clemenceau’s home carrying a stiletto and anarchist literature. He said his aim was a gesture and knew Emile Cottin who previously shot Clemenceau. Cornillon hails from Venay.
The New York Call reports in a letter to Mayor Hylan that a raid on May 1 by soldiers and sailors injured several people, with one woman blinded possibly permanently and another crippled. It demands punishment for the raiders and police officials who failed to prevent the attack.
Proposals to broaden eligibility for a national veterans association were outlined by Col. F. Lester Jones at the Pershing post meeting in Washington. The plan targets enlisted women of the Navy and Marine Corps and all Red Cross Salvation Army Y M C A GC and national guards members not in federal service along with draft boards, for inclusion in the St. Louis congress agenda May 8 through 10.

East Helena held the largest public dinner in its history honoring 73 returning soldiers sailors and marines from East Helena and nearby areas. Nearly 300 people attended a banquet at the public school with an American flag decorated corridor and music by Mrs. Myron Wing's school children. Speakers praised Montana troops and recounted war experiences while noting reconstruction challenges and community support.
London reports a crash at Kenley killing Captain Knott the pilot while General Sykes survived but shaken. A second plane over North London with Commander Legh burst into flames and he leapt to safety. Parry's sergeant’s garden burial closes a tragic series of accidents in Manchester.
London reports indicate Bolshevik forces renewed assaults on the Dvina and Vaga fronts. Gunboats shelled allied positions on the Dvina and withdrew under counter fire. After bombardment on Vaga, attackers were repulsed with heavy losses, with 40 dead found in the forest. General Ironside praised allied troops. The Archangel to Dvina ice has broken up and will likely clear for navigation within a week.
