The New York Times reports Commissioner Whalen told top corporate leaders that communists are suspected within departments and city government. He claims a movement directed from Russia exploits unemployment worries to gain power. Whalen invites leaders to discuss the issue next week.
Four people were injured in a gas explosion that wrecked two grocery stores on the Chicago north side. A clerk damaged a display window and suffered injuries that may prove fatal.
Washington mourns the death of Associate Justice Ed T Sanford who collapsed after breakfast and died from uremic poisoning. He joined the court in 1923 and will be buried in Knoxville Tennessee. Funeral details include a Supreme Court committee and family attendees.
Walter C. Kennedy, 36, shot and killed Edith M. Floor, 23, in her Peru Indiana home. He wounded her son Nerald, 10, and then killed himself. The couple had quarreled after she was seen with other men and Kennedy had criticized her associations.
The late Justice Sanford's peers in the party are expected to attend. The Supreme Court room he occupied was draped in mourning and the court will adjourn on Monday out of respect. Earlier, around 10 a.m., Justice Sanford had a dental extraction performed by Dr. Bordon Crane, the dentist noting his patient.
Representative Englebright of California announced the Bridges Bureau approved a bill to provide 4 400 000 annually for three years and 4 000 000 annually thereafter for forest fire protection work. Hearings on the measure will open Monday before the House Agriculture Committee.

Milner of Alton Illinois named vice president and general manager of the Wheat Stabilization Corporation. Kellogg remains president and general manager of the Farmers National Grain Corporation. Milner to steer marketing of wheat bought by the board as it expands operations and seeks domestic and foreign outlets.
Washington reports say Senate tensions flare as a demand seeks removal of Grundy staff tied to the old American Tariff league news bureau. Senator Morrison of Mississippi pressed the issue on the Senate rules committee chair, Mosey, who noted Grundy would assume the personnel were his employees and could not enforce removal.
Butte March 8. George Bourquin former district judge and county attorney remained critically ill at a local hospital. Doctors reported he was operated on for a brain injury after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage while playing handball yesterday.
Washington March 8. William Howard Taft, once famed for vigor, grew weaker after becoming chief justice in 1921. His doctors warned against horseback riding and golf, leading him to take long daily walks from home to the Capitol in pursuit of strenuous exercise. The decline culminated in a breakdown just over a month ago, contributing to his death.
President Coolidge announced Taft’s death during a New York stop while changing trains en route to Northampton. He praised Taft as a unique figure who held both president and chief justice roles, calling him a loyal friend and a steady, thoughtful ally to millions.

Del Monte California March 8 Charles A Lindbergh tests the left aileron from his glider for an hour and 10 minutes over the coast near Carmel. The aileron broke at about 200 feet but he made a controlled landing within 200 yards of the starting point. He continued the flight after repairs and planned to resume tomorrow.
Joliet Illinois March 3 two men died when a biplane crashed into a plowed field three miles south of Joliet United States Army Lt Clyde West a cadet flyer en route from Washington to San Diego and Carl Johnson a Joliet licensed pilot were instantly killed West reportedly attempted to pull the plane clear before crashing Witnesses said the ship appeared to stall trapping both men in the wreckage West 22 and Johnson 27 were the victims in the accident near Joliet Illinois
