El Paso Herald reporter Lester B Sutcliffe describes a dawn battle in Juarez as federal and rebel forces clash amid machine gun fire. Bullets crack the air while troops rush through the sullen morning streets and federal sharps blaze from rooftops amid ongoing combat.
Important rebel gains in the north marked Friday's developments in the Mexican revolution. Juarez, historic port of entry across the Rio Grande from El Paso, was captured by insurgents after a day of fierce fighting. Reports were received at Nogales that the seaport of Mazatlan in Sinaloa was evacuated by the federal garrison before a heavy rebel advance. At Vera Cruz, in the south the Mexican government was consolidating its position at Vera Cruz, recaptured from the rebels on Thursday. General Aguirre, rebel commander at Vera Cruz, was being pursued though believed to have escaped to the jungle region in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. Federal forces also were advancing on Torreon when General Escobar, commander-in-chief of the rebels was believed concentrating. Replacement of the American embargo on shipment of commercial planes into Mexico was announced at Washington. The other will prevent unauthorized having of air craft in the United States by rebel forces. Juarez, Chile, March 8. Teddy Barnes, an American, was found dead by soldiers who set out to rehabilitate Juarez after today's battle. His body was found beneath several slain soldiers, near the federal headquarters in the Rio Bravo hotel, where all the bodies were lying in heap. Barnes was a bartender. Vancouver British Columbia March 8 Thomas Frost 76 a member of the relief expedition to rescue General Custer died here today. Born in London he emigrated to America after early life. Following his experiences in the Tivsian troubles he left Montana and settled in Vancouver in 1908.
The body of Thomas Taggart former United States senator from Indiana was committed this afternoon at Crown Hill cemetery Indianapolis. Burial services followed brief rites at the Taggart home with Rt. Rev. Joseph M. Francis bishop of the Indianapolis diocese presiding at both home and grave.
President Hoover chaired the first cabinet meeting and expanded his plan for a federal commission to study law enforcement and justice administration. He discussed Mexico’s revolution and related federal activities, noting permits for private arms shipments to Mexican troops and surplus war materiel to the Mexican government.
Three hundred Mexican federals were interned at Fort Bliss, El Paso, under truce terms after surrendering Juarez. They stay in barracks and a riding hall under guard while the U.S. government decides disposition. Brig. Gen. Vant Horn Moseley directs the internment amid mixed rumors and large supply trucks arriving, including crates labeled Red Hot Chili.
In Bozeman on March 8, AP reports the finalists for the state extemporaneous speaking contest were announced. Competitors entering the finals tomorrow afternoon include Edward Alexander of Whitehall, Gale Crowley of Butte High, Marion Dixon of Kalispell, Jacque Harrison of Whitefish, Helen Huxley of Livingston, Lucile Maiflet of Butte Central, Louise Mamman of Killings, and Andrew Samuel of Lewistown.
Noel Wien, Alaska flyer, landed at the frozen fur ship in North Cape Siberia nine and a half hours after leaving Nome. Dispatches say weather was superb for the hop though landing facilities were poor. The round trip covered about 100 miles over untracked ice.
In Scribner Nebraska a dynamite blast from stored explosives in a barn last night killed two more workers and raised the death toll to six. About 50 people were injured as flames set off debris and damaged buildings for miles. Firefighters Strube and Schoeneck died or were fatally wounded, Schoeneck’s fiancée Louise White had collapsed after his death, and rescue work continued as hospitals treated the injured.
Marshal Ferdinand Foch, on the fifty third day of a serious illness in Paris, dictated letters showing his genuine humor. The report notes a temperature reading of 100.4 degrees tonight and his instructions to attendants.
In Bisbee Arizona March fapi the third wage increase in four months for Anon copper miners was announced today. Notices of a five per cent wage increase effective March 1 were posted at the mines of all copper companies operating in the Bisbee district.
Las Vegas state officers arrested Mayor J Heffe and Police Commissioner Roy Neagle along with other officials and alleged operators in a large vice probe. A grand jury had returned indictments yesterday revealing broad conspiracy charges tied to corrupt activities in the town.
New York March. Sleeping motor coaches for long distance bus travelers are to be shared in operation between Cleveland and Buffalo on a Chicago New Yorker route. The coaches will contain 12 berths to accommodate 15 persons, dressing rooms and other conveniences of Pullman travel.
EVA Mae Pedigo a one year old girl in Wao Texas spent the night with her murdered mother while her father lay dead outside the house. Police found Mr and Mrs Nobert Pedigo murdered in Moody near Horn. The baby’s testimony offers the only clue as investigators search for the killer who shot Mr Pedigo twice and left the scene without taking the watch or money.
A Montana state senate committee quibbled over 6.7 million dollars of income projected for the next two years to cover 7.25 million in house cut appropriations. Ghost money from phantom sources was criticized as the chamber pressed toward real gold standard funds and warned against past missteps when optimistic estimates failed to materialize.
President Hazelbaker of the Senate leads a move to prevent future delays as heavy appropriation bills clog both houses. The resolution, introduced by President Pro Tem Kane, targets more than 7.6 million dollars in biennial expenditures dumped on the assembly, risking a major decassination and a long continuation.
Eddie Wilson, proprietor of the Mian Beltimore hotel gambling suite, is sought as the slayer of former bodyguard Art Arnott Rothstein. Walsh, linked to gambler Gaylord and Arthur Clark, was killed amid gang activity. Clark and other witnesses were questioned by a grand jury. an indictment was returned.
March 8 AP report says imminent danger from floods in Miles City eased this morning as the Yellowstone River cleared of ice offshore and upstream ice jams released. a new ice jam five miles downstream was reported but expected not to cause trouble.
New York March 8 API Two hundred passengers paid 800 in fines and hundreds of liquor bottles were seized as 135 customs men boarded the Clyde liner Shawnee from Havana. Passengers, including seventy five women, had hand luggage searched and those with contraband moved to the pier office for fines of 3 or 3 dollars per bottle.
Rawine Michigan March 8 AP The endurance flight by Stinson and Randolph G Page ended after about 11 hours when they landed on Saginaw Bay ice at 9:30. Fleas, snow and strong wind forced the landing and Staton noted uncertainty over whether Sally Sovereign would be used again to try for the honor.
Mrs Griffin of Bozeman passed away here today from heart trouble. She moved to Boreman seven years ago and was editor of the Montana Homes department of the Montana Farmer, published at Great Falls. She was a charter member of the Mt. Uisalte chapter at the De A. KR. in Bozeman.
Los Angeles reports that Sally Phipps a young film actress aged 17 testified in superior court requesting a guardian. She accused her stepfather A. S. Meupter of exploiting her earnings and cruel treatment while Roger Marchell and an M M Kurney were named as temporary guardian. She had supported her mother and herself for four years and had been the main support of her stepfather since his marriage to her mother.
