Champ Clark Dies In Harness At Age 70 In Congress

A long serving Democratic leader Champ Clark died after a brief illness. The Missouri congressman had aged 70 and died in his home district while under care after pleurisy and other ailments. The House paused its business for a memorial adjournment as colleagues mourned the veteran speaker who had guided the party for decades. Clark, born James Beauchamp Clark in Kentucky in 1850, rose from farm labor to U.S. House Speaker, leading on tariff policy and party unity, and had steadfast ties to Missouri politics and national convention duties. His death ends a career marked by defense of the Payne Aldrich tariff era and a storied clash with Cannon era leadership.
