Assistant Secretary Andrews urged creation of a presidential commission to study the general effect of prohibition but Secretary Mellon opposed the move saying public opinion is settled. The House liquor committee planned to call Andrews as its first witness next Monday.
Washington March 1 4 Farm organization leaders at a conference tonight completed plans for a long drive upon Congress for agricultural relief legislation. The drive is expected to be launched tomorrow with the opening by the House Agriculture Committee of hearings on several farm relief bills including the Dickinson surplus measure. George N Peek committee chairman warned that if Congress fails to pass relief legislation in this session new political alliances could arise out of the common economic interest of the south west and central agriculture states.
A Montana meeting at the capital authorized Commissioner A H Bowman to appoint a nine member board to oversee a land settlement program. The group will form county sub committees to promote settlement and attract newcomers while planning funding for displays at the Pacific Northwest Exposition in Chicago this November and December. Dr O M Lanstrum of Helena, exposition president, chaired the session with directors J R Hobbins of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co and H R Cunningham of Montana Life Insurance Co present.
Westwood California March 1 A couple from Sacramento Mr and Mrs J E Reeder were trapped by a February 18 snowstorm at the Feather River ranger station 50 miles west of Red Bluff. With five foot drifts and collapsing supplies they boiled shoe leather after sparrow meals failed. Rescue arrived aided by a Caterpillar machine and a highway crew after a death diary chronicled their demise in hopeful relief. They were taken to a hospital.
Washington March 1 chairman Smith of the house reclamation committee introduced a bill to adjust charges on western irrigation works per interior department. Reductions include 40 727 on lower Yellowstone project Montana and North Dakota with land held by Great Northern railway and other townsite lands. Milk River project Montana would see 100 978 cut and 145 054 extra deduction due to measuring errors on St Marys East canal. Payments on 23 300 acres unproductive would be suspended. Shoshone project in Wyoming and Montana would gain 1 677 630 for unproductive acreage. Sun River deduction 78 648 for fertility loss. Huntley Montana 46 987 relief for unproductive soil. Interior secretary to record definite losses up to 41 000 for alkali land experiments. About 13 00 acres would have payments withheld temporarily.
New York March 1 The New York Times reports that virtually all leading railroads have refused or will refuse wage demands of the Order of Railway Conductors and the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. Some railroads have not yet declined though they will discuss the demands with the unions. Continued on Page Seven.
Danel S. Kennedy 67, retired horseman and Sunday school superintendent, was found dead in his Brookfield garage yesterday. Medical examiner Charlies A Deland of Warren ruled monoxide gas caused by repairing his car. Kennedy was recently arrested on a serious charge involving a young girl and was to stand trial in district court tomorrow.
Washington March 1 The effective date of the new revenue law setting taxes downward was set officially at 10 25 a m February 26 in new regulations begun by the internal revenue bureau The inheritance tax rates became effective at that hour along with changes to many other taxes The new income tax schedule will apply to incomes of last year on which taxes are payable this year
Washington march 1 senate passed a Walsh bill granting state courts jurisdiction in criminal actions arising from deaths in national parks and other federally governed places. The measure now proceeds to the house for consideration.
Topeka Kan March 1 The state board of health records a death of Henry Bruce a negro aged 126 who had lived on a Wyandotte county farm and the registrar verified the age before permanent recording.
Newport Arkansas March 1 The city was under martial law after a devastating fire destroyed more than 280 homes leaving one dead several injured and a quarter of the population homeless as relief began. The blaze started from a flue spark feeding on dry conditions with high winds and was fought by favors from Little Rock and Batesville as a national guard unit moved in with tents. Mayor E L Boyce announced a chamber of commerce relief meeting to plan aid while the electric plant remained out of service and the city relied on fire glare for light.
Miss Lucille Swallow who knew Army chaplain Rev Orville J Clampitt withdrew intimacy accusations in July 1925. Defense introduced letters showing exoneration from Vancouver barracks prompted by a letter by Swallow. General Johnson ordered revival of the case with Major Hawkins testifying. Clampitt refused to resign claiming blackmail and church official jealousy.
Oklahoma City March 1 A federal judge lifted murder indictments against W H Hale dubbed king of the Osage hills and rancher John Ramsay amid a ruling that the Roan killing site could not be treated as trust land. Hale Ramsay likely to be freed within days as the case moves from state to federal jurisdiction.
George S Livingston, jailed for forgery in Canon City prison, received seven to 14 years but dwells on being barred from singing tenor. He had published a protest pamphlet "Help! Help" while serving a prior sentence, which angered the warden and led to the tenor ban during a prisoners' performance of The Holy City.
Mrs T C Reynolds aged 101 died in Santa Rosa California. Born in Essex County Vermont she outlived five husbands, not three as sometimes reported. Her long life linked to Vermont and California communities.
Attorneys for Jesse Favre in Hancock County seek to block news distribution connected with the slaying of W M Mingee and J A McLemore. Judge Walter A White set a hearing for a change of venue with a pending petition submitted to the court. The federal entomologists near Pica yune filed an order today against publication until the copy is submitted to an official judge.
San Francisco report states Sausalito mayor J. W. Madden was convicted of violating prohibition laws and sentenced to two years in a federal penitentiary plus a five thousand dollar fine. He is held in the Marin county jail pending appeal.
Can dido A. Ferry was arrested in Oakland on assault with a deadly weapon after Charles Stoward accused him of stringing him up by the heels and beating him with a rubber hose to force a confession of improper relations with Mrs. Ferry. Ferry denied the charge and denied any affair.
In Chicago on March the Better Government association pressed for a congressional inquiry into crime and politics. Sparks flew over two photographs tied to a petition alleging State's Attorney Crowe attended a 1924 banquet hosted by the Genna brothers and other gangsters. The Tribune reproduced one image showing the speakers' table with Crowe, Secretary of State Emmerson, Lietti, Gov. Sterling, and other officials.
Northwest Helena bankers stressed the importance of early senate action on the Italian debt settlement based on the government commission report. They cited Italy’s restored credit with American easing and its potential as a buyer of grain, copper, hogs, and other Northwestern exports, keeping Montana and the region vitally interested. In Manhattan thieves dug a tunnel to reach the Ju lus Kingman Sons fur house, removing five tons of earth and stealing 1000 fox and 1000 martin pelts after weeks of prep near a police station. Separately in Brooklyn, five robbers attacked Applebaum Cohan fur shop staff and seized about 50000 in furs.
