Minnesota Voters Hear Benson Lead In Gubernatorial Primary
Minnesota Governor Elmer A. Benson pulled ahead of Hjalmar Petersen as 448 precincts reported in the gubernatorial race. Benson led by 5,081 votes with Roosevelt alignment and farmer labor support boosting his count. Republican Harold Stassen led with 18,539 over Martin Nelson 13,550 as Teach Second Mayor George Leach trailed. In the Democratic slate Thomas Gallagher topped with 3,195 to Fred Schliplin 2,353. A separate note reports a Pontiac plane crash claiming a man’s death.

Miles City reports Dean Hanscom 99 was an Olympian passenger of the second sleeper tour, twin brother Don J among those imprisoned in the sleeper as flood waters engulfed the car. Their father D J Hanscom of the Dollar Steamship Lines arrived in New York and went to the scene. Dean, badly cut but alive, broke a window and swam downstream with another man, then walked miles in wet nightclothing to reach a rescue party.
