Three Chinese bandits invaded the home of George Alfred Flynn in Markdon Manchuria and stabbed him in the abdomen with a spear. Flynn, once of Nanhua NSW, works for Texas 641 in Mulder. His wife was restrained while the attackers seized valuables. Mrs Flynn freed herself and called for help. doctors fear he may recover.
A four day Montana heat wave, only recently eased in scattered areas, leaves crops at risk. Extended dryness and high temperatures dim prospects for small grains and pastures, while unmanaged insect pests threaten widespread grasshopper infections across eastern and central Montana, officials warn. Continuous heat raises fears of continuing agricultural losses and calls for swift mitigation.
Minsonia reports rising flood danger with clogged main highway from Montana to the west halting travel. Detours are used on Clark's Fork route near Sandpoint Idaho after washouts. At Wallace Idaho a weakened bridge over the Coeur d'Alene river limits traffic to one vehicle at a time. Kellogg also imposes a vehicle weight limit as detours are formed.
In Roseburg Oregon on June 7 a search by nearly a score of flyers sought William F. Young Portland aviator missing since shortly before midnight Friday. He vanished between Medford and Portland with search now focused on Cow Creek region after a forest service employee reported hearing a plane crash near Devil’s Knob in the Devil’s Knob area.
A blistering heat wave continues across the Northwest with several sections posting record June temperatures. Grand Forks, North Dakota hits 109 degrees for a second consecutive day, while Bismarck records 102 percent, surpassing a yearly mark as heat worsens across the region.
Floods sweeping the Pacific Northwest submerged towns and urban districts. In Washington and Idaho damage reached tens of thousands of dollars and two people drowned when rivers overflowed. The Caweoman river dike breach in Kelso left many homes under water up to twenty feet.
Salt Lake City July 17 The first presidency of the Latter Day Saints announced the church will not tolerate polygamy among its members and those who violate the rule will face immediate excommunication. The church has opposed polygamy since 1892 and instructed officials worldwide to excommunicate violators.
Alabama Arkansas and Tennessee prepare to vote next month on repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment. Deep South split, with Alabama and Arkansas leading delegates to conventions on July 18 and Tennessee voting July 20. Florida officials may schedule November referendum. North and South Carolina set November 7. Texas undecided for August 24. Virginia Georgia Kentucky Oklahoma and others not yet scheduled.

Former beauty of follies and former wife of Di gene G Nokon Miss Worthing, reported missing since Thursday, vanished from a rail train near Passadena after a Santa Monica treatment for an unspecified disorder. Special Agent Fred Pillip said Worthing had boarded a train to New York. her bag remained in the compartment when the train reached Pasadena 36 minutes later. Los Angeles and Pasadena police scoured arroyos along the rail line fearing she may have leaped or fallen from the train.
Des Maines reports that supporters launch last minute drives ahead of Owa’s special election on Tuesday to repeal national Prohibition. Confidence runs high as factions push for or against ratification, with leaders and gatherings aiming to sway voters in a tense political moment.
Concord reports New Hampshire voters will ballot on Tuesday to ratify or reject the 21st amendment. The legislature has leaned toward repeal and debated altering liquor laws. Governor John Winant's position remains a factor as lawmakers consider beer and wine sale provisions.
St Paul June 17 a Hamm Brewing company truck left the yards likely carrying ransom funds for William Hamm Jr the company president held by kidnappers for 108000 while negotiators indicated some money had already been paid and Hamm was expected to be released tomorrow morning.
Reports state James Mattern, American airman, has not been heard from since departure from Khuburesh in Siberia. Moscow dispatched urgent inquiries to Khabe pine and the theater authorities, seeking word by tonight. No replies received, fueling belief Mattern may have perished at sea or been shot down during flight near the Okhotsk or Bering seas.
Washington reports the federal government launches a drive against racketeers and gunmen after the slaying of Justice Department agent Raymond J. Caffrey in Kansas City during an effort to free or kill Oklahoma train robber Frank Nash. Attorney General Cummings orders the DOJ to pursue the killers, with a task force from near Kansas City. President Roosevelt signals support for curbing labor racketeering amid new industrial bills. The department also searches Leavenworth files for clues tied to Nash’s murder.
Washington reports suggest manufacturers across rail, steel, autos, coal, textiles and electrical supplies are nearing a recovery plan submission to Hugh S Johnson. Coordinators say agreements aim to stabilize wages and curb below cost production, with July seen as start of broader national return to work.
Judge John Hurry dismissed the action by FE McMahon of Bozeman seeking to block a state insurance contract. The Miller Insurance Agency of Butte is set to insure over 4.5 million dollars of state property under a plan that divides polices among Montana agents by tax payments. McMahon appeals to the Montana Supreme Court, which scheduled hearings for July 12 after granting a stay pending disposition.
Sheridan Wyoming July reports a bootlegger named Kelso about 25 was found shot dead in his home with a small pistol under his pillow. A woman Priricia Morgan about 26 who Kelso was courting was arrested on a disorderly conduct charge but released on bond and left Sheridan for Miles City. A second manhunt involves a girl sought for questioning in a separate incident.
A bus operating across states was held at a line after officials cited lacking Montana vehicle license. Sheriff Jon Mayo of Mineral County detained the vehicle and passengers including Frank Nelson of Mpakane while a $64.60 bond was arranged by the owners to release the Meenas. The vehicle’s crew and riders had been traveling from Spokane to Coeur d'Alene via Idaho.
Baltimore June 17. The planned pig jump from an airplane for the Protestant Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd fair was not held. Instead a link sausage with a parachute was released after protests by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
At Kansas City union station plaza a brief gun assault killed five people and wounded two, in a raid aimed to free or kill Frank Nash the Oklahoma train robber. Nash lay dead in a car after the attack. Also killed were Raymond Vatfrayv, Otto Reed, Frank Hermanson, and W J Grooms. Wounded was F J Lack.
Tatayetti Ind June 17 AP One bandit died by afternoon and another near death. Police officers were in critical condition from wounds. Sanders 38 alias Girls Arsson of Nashville Tenn and Frank Byrd 29 of Indianapolis were injured. Patrolman J Wes Wilson 43 shot four times, Kilmer recovered hopeful per physicians. Suspects walked into a trap at Ampo and a bystander seized the wounded officer’s submachine gun and killed the fugitives.
New York June 17 Rep James W Wadsworth Republican says Roosevelt’s handling of emergencies is admirable yet the administration’s program signals a shift to a new American order. He warns that continued dominance of the current school of thought could lead to constitutional changes and a regimented people.
