Buena Vista June 1 report says inmates kidnaped Warden Walter J Johnson and freed him after two miles. They then killed a guard and shot at pursuing officers while declaring they would not be taken alive.
Montana farm income for the first quarter of 1938 reached 199,433 dollars daily with gains in agricultural products and equipment. Net returns rose to 9 million dollars from larger grain and livestock markets, aided by government payments and agricultural commodity programs. Continued on Page 7.
Montrose North Dakota June 11 three persons were killed and nine injured when family automobiles carrying members to a church service collided at a highway intersection twelve miles north of Montrose. The dead were Mr and Mrs Laurence Iverson and their 15 year old son Iverson. Nine others sustained injuries.
Avaconda, Erick, Frederickson and Paullun Brady of Anaconda were in a vehicle that skidded off Divide highway into the High Hole river. Brady survived with minor injuries. Avaconda drowned. The crash marks Montana's 50th fatality of the year.

Vatican City June 1 Pope Pius in a public gesture thanked 3200 Spanish soldiers who fought in the civil conflict under Franco and Generalisimo in Franchico Franco. The pontiff met veterans visiting with Ramon Serrano Suner and General Gambara, urged unity of sorrow with Our Lady of Borrown and pleaded for Christian resignation for world peace. The pope personally greeted the soldiers as they cheered.
