Rarest Alder Gulch Gold Relic Seeks Montana Custody
A solid gold Masonic emblem and pendant from Alder Gulch near Virginia City could go to either the Montana State Historical Society or the Masonic Grand Lodge of Montana. The pieces, once given to John J. Hull in 1867, include a collar and apron and are currently owned by Mrs. Jane Hull Bird. A letter from William P. Bird argues the Grand Lodge or history society should hold them, while the librarian leans toward the Grand Lodge. Hull, who arrived in the territory in 1852, later served as territorial treasurer and colonel, dying in 1883.
