Spanish government armies hold lines near Gandesa

Spanish government forces, called the people's army, clung to Gandesa despite counterattacks by land and air and floods on the Ebro river valley aimed at severing supply lines. Barcelona dispatches downplayed insurgent strategy as dams on the Noguera Pallaresa and Segre rivers were opened. In Washington, the Commerce Department noted first half of 1938 as 15 percent decline in wholesale trade and 24 percent drop in manufacturers' shipments versus 1937.

War near Washington reports AFL alerting to potential defiance of National Labor Relations Board orders after the board voided an AFL closed shop in an Indiana auto parts plant. Girl Saves Her Life After Rattler Bite on Ankle

Mary Cooper of Canyon Form used a towel as a tourniquet after a rattlesnake bit her ankle Wednesday night. She applied it tightly, stopped the venom from circulating, and was rushed to town by City Engineer Oscar Baarson for treatment by Dr. Jamies Flinn. Navy presses hunt for ship Hawaii Clipper vanishing near Manila

Manila July 80 Air and surface craft scoured the sea in vain for traces of the 26 ton Hawaii Clipper which disappeared yesterday with 15 persons about 565 miles east of Manila. Army and navy searchers sweept the area with Meigs zigzagging across the plane course under searchlights. Six army bombers flew in clear weather and reported finding nothing. The Pan American transpacific plane last noted at 9 09 pm Thursday 565 miles east of Manila on a Guam run. Possible clue from San Francisco airways officials noted a plane heard over Luzon in the San Bernardino straits three hours later, proceeding west toward the Clippers course. Lewis and Clark County Taxable Valuation Tops 15 Million for 1938

Lewis and Clark County surpasses the 15 million dollar mark in total taxable valuation for 1938. Assessor Lutey announced the county’s total value at about 15.22 million, up from 15.09 million last year, with a potential move to fourth class status after January 1, 1839. The board has not yet acted. Real and personal property values shifted due to classification changes, totaling 44.78 million in assessed value, down from last year’s 43.40 million, reflecting the altered class structure. Helena Woman Saved From Desert Death

Laura Pledalne, a former Helena resident and New York welfare worker, was rescued by state police after wandering four days through western New Mexico’s waterless wastelands with two companions. The trio, including Trens Piedaline of Winchester Kentucky and Antoinette de la Forrest of Kentucky, were found near the desert sands and planned to visit their father Dr. Joseph Piedaline, now in Lewistown.

Montana Board Ends Native Upland Bird Season

The Montana state fish and game commission declared a closed season for native upland birds including blue grouse sagehens prairie chickens and chukars to replenish dwindling numbers. New sweeper picks up 32 tons of dirt on maiden run

Helena officials report Yelena's new rotary sweeper collected about 32 tons of silt and sand on its first trip over Main Street. The machine holds 2 1/2 yards of dirt per bow and was emptied 13 times on that pass. Mayor Roberts calls it a pile of stuff as the unit will sweep Main Street and adjacent avenues on alternating mornings.
