Navy presses hunt for ship Hawaii Clipper vanishing near Manila
Manila July 80 Air and surface craft scoured the sea in vain for traces of the 26 ton Hawaii Clipper which disappeared yesterday with 15 persons about 565 miles east of Manila. Army and navy searchers sweept the area with Meigs zigzagging across the plane course under searchlights. Six army bombers flew in clear weather and reported finding nothing. The Pan American transpacific plane last noted at 9 09 pm Thursday 565 miles east of Manila on a Guam run. Possible clue from San Francisco airways officials noted a plane heard over Luzon in the San Bernardino straits three hours later, proceeding west toward the Clippers course. Laura Pledalne, a former Helena resident and New York welfare worker, was rescued by state police after wandering four days through western New Mexico’s waterless wastelands with two companions. The trio, including Trens Piedaline of Winchester Kentucky and Antoinette de la Forrest of Kentucky, were found near the desert sands and planned to visit their father Dr. Joseph Piedaline, now in Lewistown.

New sweeper picks up 32 tons of dirt on maiden run
Helena officials report Yelena's new rotary sweeper collected about 32 tons of silt and sand on its first trip over Main Street. The machine holds 2 1/2 yards of dirt per bow and was emptied 13 times on that pass.
