State employment service places 8677 in jobs in six months
Chairman Barclay Craighead announced that Montana state employment service placed 8677 people in jobs from January 1 to June 30 this year. Of these 2913 secured by private employers and 4784 on public works projects. In six months 1937 data show 15159 placements. The service emphasizes harmony with private employers and aims to provide best-qualified workers amid wartime adjustments. In five large counties the six month totals were 149 in Silver Bow, 657 in Cascade, 395 in Missoula, 880 in Lewis and Clark, and 379 in Yellowstone. The service, part of the unemployment compensation commission, plans to place workers in permanent jobs and will assist unemployed workers when Montana begins unemployment benefits on July 1, 1939.

San Saba Texas July 22 flood swelled to 42 feet washing out the north side of town. More than 400 people fled to lowlands along the river as two were drowned and others missing. Three Young Women Missing In New Mexico Cave Expedition
State police and sheriff's deputies launched a search tonight for three women tourists missing since Tuesday near Grants. The party planned to descend into ice caverns using ropes, aided by hotel records and belongings for identities.
