London reports say German warplanes bombed scattered British sites causing some casualties with little damage in the Midlands East Anglia and Scotland while leaflets denounced the Atlantic battle as the conflict widens. Berlin comments on US entry in Iceland.
The Soviet Information Bureau rejects German claims of hundreds of bodies found in Lvov and other cities as deliberate fabrications. It cites testimony by a German officer Wilhelm G. that Gestapo and propaganda prepared various descriptions of Bolshevik atrocities before the Soviet attack. The report notes RAF activity in central Germany and western regions.
In unoccupied France July, Marshal Petain told a constitutional committee he aims to end universal male suffrage. He described a future state governed by a hierarchic order from families and professions, with authority flowing from service to the community rather than sheer numbers.
President Roosevelt clarified that the uncertain line separating the eastern and western hemispheres will not be treated as the eastern boundary of American defense activities. Senator Wheeler faced reproach for an Iceland remark reported in Washington.
Moscow July 8 Maxim Litvinov urged Britain and the United States to keep pressuring Hitler unrelentingly to deny the Nazis any respite while they fight the Soviet Union. He spoke in English to British and American listeners via radio and NBC rebroadcast in the U S but atmospheric conditions blocked reception. He said the Red Army bears the shock of Hitler’s war machine as Britain fights the Nazi onslaught with U S aid, insisting Hitler should not gain a moment’s respite or a westward truce. The president spoke at a press conference after Iceland was occupied by American forces, addressing questions on Iceland and Atlantic defense. Roosevelt declined to confirm plans or intentions about German bases and commented on Marshall recommendations for extending service of selectees and guardsmen.
Oakland, July 8. Sol Dangott, a clerk at Sant Silver's ham and bacon shop, counts daily receipts of 337 dollars and places them in a bag for the bank. A female customer orders bacon and lard. Sol bags items separately, then later discovers he has the bacon bag. The employer, Silver, suspends him but requires repayment of 337 dollars from his weekly 80 dollar pay.
A Know Your Money campaign to educate the public on currency security moves through Montana cities. A. N. Bechtel of the U S Secret Service visited Gov Ford at the capitol after meeting Spokane officials and outlining the program to combat counterfeit notes and the decline in metalless currency.
Mert James Allen aged 22 months, son of Mr and Mrs Wilbern Allen of East Helena, died about thirty minutes after accidentally swallowing two ounces of a strong undiluted insecticide. He was rushed to a hospital but died. County coroner Dr W F Cashmore described the insecticide as highly concentrated, used with one part to a thousand parts water for potato pest control. Survivors include the parents, a brother Lyle aged three and a half, and a two month old sister. The body rests at Opp and Conrad funeral home.
Berlin reports say Eastern front fighting intensifies as German infantry assault Soviet defenses long prepared by Moscow. High command releases minimal notes while Vichy circles note four days of near-stoppage due to losses. German air and ground forces press toward Moscow, with DNB confirming breakthroughs around Bessarabia and heavy tank and gun reinforcements reported.
Dr H C Roquet of Big Timber was elected president of the Montana Veterinary Medical Association at Helena as the 33rd annual convention closed. Great Falls was chosen as the 1942 convention city with Dr G W Cronen of the U S Bureau of Animal Industry as vice president. Dr Roquet succeeds Dr Hadleigh March of Bozeman. Dr B E A Tunnlelife of Bozeman was named secretary treasurer.
Georgia Supreme Court today upheld a divorce won by Lucian R. Boone Jr citing his wife Susan Brotherton Boone caused jealousy and fights. Boone, former Lakemoore club operator, testified he danced with guests as part of his job and his wife tore four shirts from his back while he dressed for a party.
In Cotito Panama a gun battle between police and a Swiss German nudist colony left ten dead and eight wounded. Police, seeking to enforce registration and immigration rules, faced heavy resistance from leaders led by Carlos Lehner who warned the colony would use force.
Helsinki endured a severe pre-dawn bombing by Soviet planes described as the fiercest since the 1939 40 Finnish war. Fires spread through a workers district as firefighters and volunteers fought widespread blazes amid crowds fleeing the devastation. The Moscow war report said Soviet forces launched counterattacks along a 1000 mile front from the Black Sea to the Baltic, driving German forces back in several sectors with tanks artillery and air power.
Strikes affecting defense work near Jefferson Barracks St Louis and Leavenworth penitentiary Kansas ended yesterday through government action. Leavenworth transfers were said to return the prison to normal routine while tied-up WPA projects in St Louis faced $4 million delays. Union leaders cited wage and overtime issues and mediation efforts.
A detachment of 24 from the Philadelphia navy yard entered the Keast Key and Mattison company plant at Ambler Pennsylvania this night and removed materials needed for building the navy department annex in Washington. Navy trucks moved with full consent of labor and management and left without incident. Naval personnel loaded materials to avoid delaying urgent construction amid Janor difficulties at the plant.

President Roosevelt looked on as Senator James Francis Byrnes swore in as an associate justice of the Supreme Court. The White House office crowd included members of Congress the cabinet Supreme Court justices and Byrnes family from South Carolina.
Red Lodge hosts the Montana department American Legion and auxiliary for their annual convention. Milo J. Warner national commander and Mrs Louis J Lemstra national president of the auxiliary will address attendees. The event concludes Saturday with a tour of the Red Lodge Cooke City highway.
