In Barcelona, rebels bomb Madrid killing over 300 and wounding 700, including 158 orphans. Reports say 168 children died at a church basement after a direct hit as bombs flooded an adjacent shelter and water pipes broke. The attack is cited as a response to a proposed air truce.

Police say they expect to clear up soon the shooting of Russell Hard a 44 year old Justice department attorney in a street attack near a hotel. A woman described as a possible companion was seen with him before the shooting but Hard denies knowing her and says his car would not start. He was taken to hospital with a hip wound and a hotel employee later reported a woman had been with him briefly. A special assistant to the Attorney General was wounded in the hip by an unidentified shooter nearby. The attorney was placed under $500 bond as a material witness.
Washington January 30 The legislative logjam appears near end as the senate may lay aside the anti lynching bill tomorrow after weeks of delay by southern senators. Majority Leader Barkley of Kentucky announced plans to call the chamber may not consider the measure again this session.
Two policemen responding to an anonymous plea found a diphtheria stricken household in Chicago. One child died at the scene and another died after removal to hospital. Retrnard Freepather, an unemployed railroad worker, his wife Catherine, and two children were in distress.
A severe cold wave swept the Rocky Mountain region and Great Plains and pushed into the upper Midwest. Temperatures fell to 20 below in Sheridan Wyoming 18 below in Moorehead Minnesota and 14 below in Huron South Dakota as forecasters warned of continued freezing across Missouri Iowa Minnesota Wisconsin Indiana and Michigan with Chicago expected to reach 10 below in coming hours.
Washington dispatch reports John J. Lewis of the Committee for Industrial Organization urging Congress to immediately open WPA rolls and create 3,000,000 jobs to avert starvation among unemployed. He cites 25,000 Chicago, 10,000 Detroit, 8,500 Minneapolis, 10,000 Milwaukee, 6,000 Buffalo workers needing relief and calls for supplemental funding through June 30, 1938.
New York reports from 16,000 birthday events for President Roosevelt's 46th birthday show contributions to the Fight Infantile Paralysis campaign shattering records. Keith Morgan, national chairman, said results from New York, Washington, Boston, Baltimore and Chicago plus other cities were far over the top, though total funds remain undetermined.

Nine miners were killed today by an underground fire at Dumbreck colliery near Kilsyth in Stirlinghire Scotland. Volunteers fought through smoke and debris to reach the men, found near the bottom of the pit as wives prayed at the pit head.
In Miami Florida January 30 William Green urged the American Federation of Labor to sever all ties with Labor’s Nonpartisan league. The AFL president released a report urging withdrawal by state federations city central bodies and locals and stopping contributions to Junbor’s league. He called for coordinated action to oppose any candidates backed by the league or its groups. Major George L Berry once headed the league.
In Conshohocken Pennsylvania ten nuns at the St Josepha Lome for the aged aided by firemen fought a blaze that swept a 100 year old building rescuing all twelve inmates. Nuns and volunteers worked from bedsides to haul hose lines while others fetched garments from an Ambler orphanage. Eight injured volunteers and chaplain Father Ilwivks were treated after the four story fire.
New York January 30 Ja pano the WPA circus elephant saved by Roosevelt did her bit today for the campaign against infantile paralysis on the president's birthday. After a Bronx circus performance she carried a tin bucket around the arena collecting contributions from the performers.
Shunaha reported the slapping of Julia M. Allison third secretary at the US embassy in Nanking followed by a Japanese correction of his earlier claim that Allison had insolently provoked the incident. The incident occurred as Allison sought a barracks entry related to an attack on a Chinese woman at Napkieg University. Joseph C. Grew, the American ambassador to Tokyo, filed representations with Japan over the matter.
