Havana report says the U S delegation will push for an open discussion of American policies in the Caribbean and Latin America. Washington claims there is nothing to fear or regret in the current policy, but the issue hinges on requests for debate and the matter may continue on page two.
The South Carolina Supreme Court ruled that gas sales cannot be made on Sundays under state blue laws, while unromanticized golf remains lawful. The decision followed Gov. John G. Richards's year-old push to enforce Sabbath statutes dating back to earlier eras.
Lewistown Jan 20 AP grand championship sweepstakes awards for chickens at the Montana State Pen show went to D L Doig Sixteen J R Scott Helena Mrs Theodore Archer Musselshell and Mrs W H White Bilings. The grand championships on bronze turkeys were earned by E Tf Bodley Hobson Mrs Jessie Bradley Bozeman and Mrs L Money Geraldine.
Washington January 20 AP The U S senate faces a half representation with Frank J Smith’s seat vacant unless he resigns or legal action forces an election. Governor Len Small refused to rerun the senate action declaring the seat vacant, leaving Illinois with one senator at least until December 1929, as a new election is forced this year. Supporters of Smith argue the governor cannot appoint until Smith formally steps aside.
Washington reports the Montana National Bank of Billings faced a Montana Supreme Court challenge to a Yellowstone county tax on its capital stock. Counsel argued the tax taxed all assets including tax-exempt government securities, creating discrimination against state banks which tax assets only. County counsel countered there was no unlawful discrimination, maintaining national bank tax as Congress prescribed. Continued on Page Two.
The first evidence in the case against 22 year old Marty Till for the murder of his mother was presented after opening statements. Ernest Le Stoffer testified and the state showed plats of the Hill home basement and floors where the body was buried.
Nesib El Jab, once a columnist for Frederick W. Enwright of Boston, surrendered to police as the second of four suspects. Enwright’s chauffeur Fred R. Dutton faced $10,000 bond on kidnapping charges. El Jab to be arraigned for assault with a dangerous weapon and attempted murder. Police chase two remaining suspects, “Snake” and “Cannonball,” in a plot to extort $325,000 by threatening Enwright and his 9 year old daughter. Enwright says he was held up at pistol point and driven to a deserted cottage where the men attempted extortion, then released after a compromise.

Miami, January 20. The American Federation of Labor will demand major political parties include a 2.75 percent beer measure in campaign platforms. President William Green announced this after the federation’s legislative council heard United Brewery Workers advocate Joseph Overfeld. The push, linked to temperance progress, aims for inclusion in party platforms for the election year conventions. The Los Angeles convention previously favored amending the Volstead act.
Ogden Utah Jan 20 AP prediction that women s styles will change to longer skirts to revive ancient prosperity was made at the national woolgrowers convention. Speakers forecast steady or rising wool prices for 20 years and urged a federal board of expert wool appraisers to ensure imported wool pays due duties under law.
Mae Dunn files suit against Lowell E Dunn Portland advertising man after wedding September 23 1924 in Washington forests where couple lived for nine days on wild berries fish and small game. Grounds include liquor fondness and neglect.
Washington January 26 AP Calm prevailed in the Senate after a storm over Cathphorem and Governor Mired Somth and Heflin of Alabama challenged Robinson of Arkansas. An overwhelming vote of confidence was given to Robinson by his party. Heflin signaled he would not renew the feud and would pursue other matters while still criticizing the Roman Catholic political machine. He planned to meet Mayor Gunter of Montgomery on Monday to discuss attacks by the mayor via telegram inviting the Democratic leader to speak in the Alabama capital. Both Robinson and Heflin received many letters of support amid the Senate battle.
In Los Angeles on January 20 a tearful reunion occurred in the jail cell of William Edward Hickman, the confessed kidnapper and slayer of Marian Parker. Thomas Wickman, father of Hickman, arrived from El Paso to join the court fight against the death penalty. Both father and son wept as they met. the elder Wickman declined to question his son about the crimes. He told him his mother was not in Los Angeles but would be there shortly.
Denver January 20 AP Wyoming peace officers fear an influx of members of the Industrial Workers of the World and possible industrial trouble at beet sugar factories. Col Paul P Newlan adjutant general of the Colorado National Guard says Colorado peace officers will cooperate with Wyoming and guard will act as an intelligence service for Wyoming authorities.
Detroit January 2 AP report a city patrolman ended a 24 hour rescue attempt when a marooned collie sighted on a cake of ice in Lake St. Clair was shot after efforts to save it failed. The dog was found far out in the lake as frigid waters churned around.
Washington Jan 20 AP Rep Dickinson Iowa Republican proposes bills to raise import rates on more than a dozen farm commodities and move several others from free to protected. The measures go to the Ways and Means Committee, but analysts doubt quick passage. Dickinson leads the farm bloc, claiming the plan aids farmers while many in his party and Democrats from farm areas remain noncommittal.
London Jan 39 -4- The Church of England revises its prayer book and submits it to the church assembly on February 6. If ratified, it returns to the House of Commons after December 15 when Parliament rejected the earlier version in one of modern times' most dramatic debates. The move follows talks on church unity and hints that unity may require reconciliation with Rome, igniting renewed controversy. Continued on Page Tan.
Montana's State Highway Commission held its regular meeting in Helena and advanced discussion on the Whitehall to Three Forks road project. Proponent Ralph Robertson urged Jefferson Canyon as the route, while alternatives via Antelope Creek were also reviewed. decision postponed to the next meeting on February 7.

Millsboro Ole January 21 A heavy blaze destroyed two city blocks causing vast property loss as high winds hampered efforts. Firefighters from Chillicothe Washington Court House and Wilmington battled the flames through a midnight snowstorm assisting Hillboro Gazette reporters and hindering protection of the town.
President Wally Z Cosprave of the Irish Free State toured New York on his first visit to Amelia, moving briefly along Broadway. Police protected the event as crowds and a parade stirred minor disorder. Cosprave remarked with a chuckle at unfriendly demonstrations before continuing to Chicago.
