President Coolidge addressed the sixth Pan American Congress in Havana urging cooperation among the 31 American republics to uphold Western ideals and shared freedom bequeathed by Columbus. The National theater was packed as Mrs Coolidge looked on.
Washington reports Rep Garner of Texas accuses Secretary Melon of blocking the $290 million tax reduction bill to mask a rise in tax assessments on about 1,000 large corporations. Democrats press for Senate consideration as Republicans plan to delay action until after March 15 to await the first tax returns.
Judge George M Bourquin presided as Metals Recovery sued Anaconda Copper Mining to bar use of flotation reagents it leased from Minerals Separation. The suit centers on a 1917 patent bought from Clement L Perkin, challenged by Anaconda as invalid and as covering reagents and processes already in use. Continued on Page Two.

Four entombed miners trapped in the No 1 nine slope of the Lemgh Valley Coal Company in Oneida were rescued shortly before 2 am. They were buried behind a coal rush about 300 to 490 feet above the bottom of the 1,000-foot slope yesterday afternoon. None showed injuries or weakness after the ordeal.
The House Agriculture Committee to begin hearings on the new McNary-Haugen bill today. Despite changes, it retains the equalization fee that President Coolidge vetoed last session. The panel will also consider other farm relief proposals.

Walsenburg Colorado January 16 coroner's jury verdicts assign responsibility for the January 12 riot that left two striking miners dead to the state police in the case of Kiementz Chalvez. A second verdict in Salesting Martines’ death avoided attributing blame.
Secretary Mellon declared that reports he favored Hoover as the Republican nominee did not come from him. He said he has given no indication of a presidential candidacy and has not intimated any position or plans for the convention.
Roosevelt field New York January 16 The third attempt by Clarence D Chamberlin and Roger Q Williams to seize the world duration flying record from Germany failed as ice formed on their monoplane forcing an emergency descent after about three and a half hours airborne.
A mob estimated at ten thousand stormed the county jail in Flint Michigan to lynch Adolph Hotelling 47 confessed slayer of Dorothy Schneider despite a militia output. National guardsmen dispersed the crowd using tear gas and hand to hand fighting left three men under arrest as the jail opened to receive prisoners. Hotelling was reported spirited to Lansing and later confessed to the killing at Mt Morris after identification by Archie Bacon.
Chicago reports that George Woodruff, a tanker prominent in Joliet banking, faced a second blackmail attempt demanding $2000. Six private detectives pursued two youths in a dilapidated car after they seized a decoy package, exchanging gunfire. Woodruff previously ignored a $50,000 demand six years earlier.
Winchester reports Mrs. Morte Prager, once linked to the deaths of Magdalene Talts and another child, retracted claims officials called an avenger plot. An extended probe into the case began at Greenup as authorities reassess the evidence.
