Washington January 15 Opponents opened their attack on the St Lawrence waterway treaty in the senate led by Senator Lewis who warned it would provide a military avenue through the United States for Britain. The vote on the treaty remained distant as discussion stretched two days with only two senators speaking Lewis and Pittman. Senator Vandenberg countered that Britain would not seek war and that a war between the U S and Canada was hard to imagine.
