Washington January 14 J. Hoover today nominated arts L Sheridan of Great Falls nt for reappointment as collector of customs for district No 38 Great Falls.
Washington January 14 AP report says lobbying in Washington described as simple graft by Senate lobby committee chair Caraway. The panel estimates over 400000 dollars spent by sugar tariff interests and absolves President Hoover of impropriety. The inquiry probes New York importers, fertilizer amendments, and White House contacts, with no censure found.
The National Bank of Montana American National Bank and Montana Trust and Savings announce a three bank consolidation. They will erect a substantial new building at Sixth Avenue and Main Street to house the merged institutions. In Walseyburg Colorado January 14 a deadly meningitis outbreak threatens the Tioga mining camp thirteen miles north after two children died and several others fell ill. Tioga School closures ordered by E C Willson superintendent of Kehler mine following the deaths of a six year old boy and a four year old girl May Fern Thompson. Another man in the community showed illness. the outbreak prompted precautionary measures as authorities investigate.
Riga Latvia January 14 a treaty of arbitration and conciliation between Latvia and the United States was signed today by Foreign Minister Balodis and American Minister Coleman in a move to ease tensions and promote peaceful relations between the two nations.
An unidentified man about 60 was found dead in a rest house at the Horn Hot Springs park. A .32 caliber pistolshot through the right temple caused death. The body bore no identification except initials W. H. P. He had recently been in Minot, North Dakota, and sheriff Parker attributed the death to despair from unemployment. Both hands were frostbitten but faint life remained. authorities found no foul play signs.
The Hague Jan. 14 German central bank chief Dr. Schacht signaled Reichsbank will adopt German law changes to subscribe to the capital of the international reparations bank under pressure from the majority. Government and delegation then agreed to amend the law making Reichsbank participation obligatory, signaling compliance with the Young plan framework.

Shertie Charles Weight of Marie copa county was captured with two men near Laveen by a posse after an exchange of shots. Mrs Irene Schroeder of Bene wood, We Vu, and the two men were taken to question. They are tied to the murder of Corporal Brady Purl near Newcastle, Pa. Deputy Joe Chapman reported the capture as the climax of a statewide pursuit after a deputy was kidnaped at Florence, Ariz. and another deputy shot at Chandler, Ariz.
Ele ven Horton, longtime president of the Te hekial State agaembly in 1900 and Billings resident, died at a hospital today. She served on the board of directors of the Old Walls' home for the aged and children since its founding 28 years ago. Survived by two daughters and a son. Funeral services set for Thursday afternoon.
Great Falls Jan 14 Twenty two planes of the Arctic patrol tested winter conditions between Selfridge Field Michigan and Spokane. The maneuver extended westward as three pirate ships attempted to cross the Continental Divide at 12000 feet landing at Ballepel. Delays due to motor trouble and warming-device transport issues slowed the group. Major Ralph Royce said equipment must be ready for long flights in extreme cold.
Fire at the Anderson Hawkins Clothing store in Helena caused about $30,000 in stock loss. Proprietor Osean A. Anderson estimated about $25,000 in stock value with $22,000 insured. salvage possible but most items lost to flames and smoke. The blaze began in the basement, spreading through the building after smoke poured from Higgins Cigar store next door and was reported by Shirley Garrity of Great Northern. The incident continued from the basement and was noted to have started from a furnace.
Mexico's president elect Rubia, announced by secretary Eduardo Fernandez Chataro, plans to return to Mexico by January 20 or 21. The statement was made during a Grand Canyon, Aria event.
Des Moines Iowa January 14. Des Moines University a Baptist fundamentalist institution closed last fall after turmoil affecting students and staff was ordered sold to satisfy a 225000 mortgage held by Goatsmans National Bank of St Louis. Federal Judge Charles A Dewerx ordered the sale of the real estate buildings and equipment.
At West Point Nov date, 137 cadets faced examinations with 32 failing. One cadet, Monte Parham, is African American and discharged for academic shortfall but eligible for March reexamination and potential reentry. Among the dismissed were 48 plebes and the rest sophomores. most failed the general review in December and the special second exam. Major General William R. Smith notes improved plebe grades versus last year’s discharge rate of 15.7 percent.
