In Farmington near Fairmont a mine explosion at Jamie son Coal and Coke No. 8 trapped 38 miners. Rescue teams report slow progress due to dense smoke and debris blocking passages about 2800 feet from the hoist shaft. Officials fear fatalities as workers are pulled from the mine, information pending continued efforts.
Helena business leaders at the Helena Commercial Club meeting urged unity to share Montana’s prosperous times. Speakers called for curb on pessimism, welcomed outside investment, and praised leaders Isaac Bayer and S V Stewart while noting farm immigration growth and Northern Pacific railroad optimism.
Albany Jan. 14 On the eve of the state Democratic committee meeting Governor Smith announced that he will retire from politics when his term ends and enter some business field. He said business prospects offer a better future than political life.
Telegrams from Nogales Arizona dated January 14 report intense suffering in flood devastated districts of Nayarit Mexico. About 9000 people homeless and up to 2000 dead. Property loss estimated at 5 million dollars. Red Cross relief hindered by poor transport and inaccessible areas.
John Washington, great great grandson of Samuel Washington, says George Washington drank and danced and smoked in his era. He recounts Washington as a gentleman who made whisky in Virginia and attended social amusements. The remarks came during Rupert Hughes address to the Sons of the Revolution in Washington.
Salt Lake City January 14 Ralph W. Seyboldt 26, slayer of Patrolman D W Crowther in October 1923, must face a firing squad at the Utah state prison early tomorrow morning. Five times sentenced to death, he was denied a stay of execution tonight by the board of pardons. His counsel sought to show a juror disqualified himself at a previous trial by expressing opposition to capital punishment. Seyboldt asked for commutation to life imprisonment. His parents live at Defiance Ohio and his wife and child at Columbus.
Boston representatives of Charles Ponz were arrested on a blue sky law violation for selling unregistered securities as brokers or salesmen. Arraigned in municipal court they posted 1000 bail. case scheduled for next week. Attorney General Benton led the probe into the Charpon land syndicate and tied the arrest to the broader scheme.
Chicago reports dancer Evan Burrows Fontaine won her fight against removal to California over a contempt of court citation related to a breach of promise suit against Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney. Federal Judge Wilkerson refused removal, after a California injunction had blocked action against the young man.
A fire at two American Wood Rim Company plants in Onaway Michigan killed three men and left one missing while injuring three others with serious burns. Identified dead are L. D. Smith Fred Van Phoft and Eugene Precour. Missing man is John Tate.
Special Agent J E Dunn told the Senate Military Committee that none of the original evidence gathered by the Federal Trade Commission against the Aluminum Company of America has been obtained by the Department of Justice in its investigation. He spoke in Washington on Jan 14.
Helena and St Charles posted strong showings in the opening session of the Helena Invitational. St Charles defeated Butte Central 21 to 14, while Helena overwhelmed Powell County at Deer Lodge 32 to 12. Afternoon games featured Helena vs St Charles and Deer Lodge vs Bozeman. evening sessions included St Charles vs Bozeman and Helena vs Butte Central.
By Al Gaskell Helena High School opened its 13th annual invitational tournament with the two Helena entries winning by safe margins in fast games. Sparkling team play highlighted the action as both teams posted solid performances despite the lopsided scores.
At Wilburton Oklahoma January 14 the Lions club the citys only civic group appealed to national citizens for 100000 to aid destitute widows and children of 91 miners killed in the Degnan McConnell mine No 21 explosion near Wilburton yesterday The club sent a telegram to Governor Trapp requesting help from Oklahoma residents.
New York reports a Greek freighter Nirefs lost at sea off the British coast with all crew aboard. The royal mail liner Orca picked up signals for help on January 3, placing the Nivels 60 miles distant. A British freighter Hector later confirmed the position but noted no signs of wreckage or survivors.
W. C. Durant, the automobile manufacturer, was injured when two trains collided at Frontenac Florida. A railroad worker and two colored attendants on Durant's private car were killed. The railroad supplied a special train to rush him to New York.

Butte, Jan 4. William ID Schots, 47, of Washington DC, was found dead from ammonia fumes in isolation by a refrigerator car 60 miles from Butte as trainmen opened it. Jason Gregg, 33, of Bath, was unconscious and in serious condition but expected to recover. Two telegrams in Schots pocket identified him but gave no address.
In San Diego California on January 14 Lieutenant Frederick G Kahn and Seaman First Class B L Law of the U S Navy air unit attached to the battleship West Virginia were killed when their airplane crashed and fell a thousand feet into San Diego Bay.
Rescue teams in Wilborton Oklahoma recovered 34 victims from the Degnan McConnell mine after a gas explosion. Cecil McKinney, a white miner, crawled from the air shaft 23 hours after the blast and survived. A Black miner was later found alive at the 14th level before being brought to the surface.
State Auditor George P. Porter reports Montana general fund debt trimmed by $211,727.30 in the first year of Governor J. E. Erickson’s administration. Overdrafts dropped from $3,770,838.18 to $3,559,110.88 despite $225,000 in Dixon-era deficiencies and 1925 legislature costs. The fund received $450,000 from W. A. Clark heirs but lost $48,000 from tax credits and $200,000 metal mines tax not credited. Outstanding warrants stood at $3,986,880.30 with $427,769.42 cash on hand.
A coroner's inquest in Great Falls cleared Elsie Young of murdering her husband Charles FE Young at their Black Eagle home. She said he threatened to kill her and their four children and had assaulted her. her 13-year-old son witnessed the shooting. Young, 48, worked at the Great Falls wire mill.
Washington January 1 AP The House continued debate on the Italian war debt settlement without agreement on a vote. Rep July Democrat Tennessee said the plan cancels too large a portion, unfair to American taxpayers. The president nominated Thomas J. Smith Spokane Wash for postmaster.
A federal suit filed today by C. A. Rasmussen Montana internal revenue collector seeks 193696.85 in income and profits taxes for WIS and JOY against Charles E. Meagher as trustee of the bankrupt brokerage firm Teil broaner company. Interest at one per cent per month from yesterday is also demanded.

Denver authorities trapped a covert society bootlegging ring on Capitol Hill and Seventh Avenue. Nearly a dozen fashionable homes were raided, bonded liquor seized, and state prohibition charges filed against three men and one woman, while leaders remained at large. The Covingtons, alleged liquor venders, were jailed after federal agents uncovered the operation during a suspected opium smuggling probe.
