In Mexico, 4,000 federal troops chase 20 bandits blamed for a brutal weekend slaughter in Michoacan Jalisco and Guerrero. Estimated dead may reach 50 as the bandits wrecked a train, looted Yurecuaro, and cremated victims before escaping with loot.
London reports in the Daily Sketch that J. Krishnamurti, a young Hindu, was proclaimed the second Messiah at Adyar in British India yesterday though the paper does not publish the direct statement. Annie Besant and leading Theosophists are cited as proclaiming him while dissenting members in England protest.
Evelyn Castle nine becomes adopted daughter of Harry Carpenter an engineer with Southern Pacific. He drove the train that struck the Castle home at a grade crossing in Harrisburg Oregon last summer.
Tanaoe M. Wrynkoop of Berryville one of two Americans aboard a train raided by bandits near Guadalajara describes a brutal massacre. He says guards and most crew were killed and estimates 20 to 50 Mexican passengers perished. He saw 20 suspicious men with rifles boarding at a station before opening fire.
Stray payroll checks found rivering the streets point to a bank raid at the Mercantile Trust company post office box in Witshursh California. The missing $14,000 payroll from Columbia Steel was likely in the box and had been routed through San Francisco before returning for cancellation.
Oklahoma City report says confessions were obtained from Earnest Burkhart and John Ramsey in Osage country killings of 1922 and 1923. Details not released. Edwin K. Brown declined to confirm the report to the Associated Press.
The resignation of Representative Langley of Kentucky was received and accepted by the House after the Supreme Court refused to review charges for violation of prohibition laws. Mrs John Kenny, white wife of a full blooded Indian, shot Fred Tillovan Osage attorney in Guthrie two months ago and was cleared by a mesmeric defense. Her husband John Kenny seeks divorce as ring members turn him against her. Foreman Harry Donaldson leads the federal grand jury investigating the killings.
In Chicago on January 11 police questioned Desire Defrere Belgian baritone and Giacomo Spadoni assistant conductor of the Chicago Civic Opera after the shooting of Henry Spingola a Genna gang rival. Both men denied involvement and were released as officers investigated possible ties to Dion O Banion led violence. Three other suspects remained in custody as police pursued risk of henchmen linked to Geno Genna feud.
Ohio State University probe into alleged liquor law violations and communist activity yielded little. Deputy Prohibition Commissioner Propst testified he knew of no definite university violations, aside from Dabney Horton. He noted Horton’s case was unique and that alumni and non students were blamed more than students. Horton’s wife mentioned Bolshevism and a broad sweep of progressive ideas, while Propst found Horton not inclined toward communism.
