A nor’easter moving from Florida to New England caused eight deaths and multiple injuries. The storm dropped snow across New York New Jersey Pennsylvania and Michigan with a 35 mile offshore gale driving four barges ashore.
Denver district attorney said the Mandell commutation investigation continues with possible new witnesses before the county grand jury. The governor had commuted the prisoner from 9 to 2 years to 4 to 10 years, making him eligible for parole July 7.
Miss Rose Palmer daughter of J N Palmer of Farmington New Mexico Miss Merle Smoak daughter of O T Smoak of Farmington and Talbot Taylor of Farmington were killed when the car returning from a basketball game left the road four miles south of Aztec New Mexico and crashed into a tree two others were badly hurt early today.
Associate Justice Albert J. Galen announces a memorial service in the supreme court room at 10 o'clock on the morning of Thursday February 4 under the Montane Bar association. Judge Joseph R. Jackson of Butte and president of the Montana Bar association was asked to speak but will be absent in New York and will designate a substitute.
In Bernard village near Southwest Harbor Maine residents felt the first tidal wave today. The unexplained phenomenon appeared suddenly in the harbor area and disrupted daily life as observers reported ripples and rising water levels along the shore. Continued on Daze.
A boiler explosion aboard a Chesapeake and Ohio freight Mallet engine in Hurricane near Huntington, West Virginia, kills engineer J. D. Roche of Huntington and brakeman D. P. Murray A. Stebbins of Glasgow was unanimously elected full time secretary of the Montana Wool Growers Association at a directors and executive committee meeting held yesterday afternoon at the National Wool Exchange in the Placer hotel building. He succeeds H. H. Pigott, who resigned after years in the post. Stebbins will operate from the wool exchange and begin immediate efforts to expand membership across the state, with financing arranged. Plans for the annual meeting, likely in Helena, were discussed.
Washington notes report a Senate debate on joining the world court with Senator Williams of Missouri delivering his maiden speech and Senator Walsh of Montana continuing his address in favor of adhesion. Guthrie Oklahoma January 9 AP Hale a king of the Osage is charged with murder in the death of Henry Roan and named in a federal grand jury probe into an Osage conspiracy linked to multiple deaths. State charges accuse him of plotting W B R Smith’s March 1923 killing. Indictments include John Ramsey. Hale already in jail. Jury reports indicate many liquor related indictments and other Osage cases.
Forsyth Montana January 9. Peter Jacobi rancher and his niece Miss Mathilda Natseh were murdered for robbery after a confession by Arthur Thomas Mlesterly, a World War veteran who escaped a Knowville Iowa insane asylum in 1924. Mlesterly’s latest statements describe selecting the Jacobi ranch as the crime scene and killing the victims in December.
The Senate Judiciary Committee pressed the Justice Department on delays in the Aluminum Company of America case and disclosed a parallel inquiry into the Aluminium Goods Manufacturing Co, one third owned by the former firm. Assistant Attorney Centeral Donovan provided the information.
Charles L. Sheridan state commander W L Jones state adjutant and Ward Crosby state membership director met with post representatives in Billings on January 9 to outline plans for a Montana Legion drive targeting eight thousand members as part of a nationwide goal of 1060000. Similar meetings are set for the next two Saturdays in separate towns.

Nogales Arizona January 9 Special dispatches report rains and floods in Nayarit Mexico subsiding after a historic disaster. Estimated losses put deaths around 300 and property damage between 3,000,000 and 5,000,000 pesos. Seven small villages along the Santiago river were wiped out and thousands of cattle perished. Communication with San Blas established later, with reports of no heavy damage there and no lives lost.
The United States Mexico relations grew tense as Ambassador Sheffield filed a formal protest with the Mexican foreign office against retroactive provisions of new Mexican laws called the petroleum and anti alien land acts. American investments in Mexico face jeopardy under the enactments.

New York Jan 9 The Anthracite Wage Conference adjourned today until 2 o clock Sunday afternoon. The session was spent in discussion with a committee of the whole and separate caucuses of operators and miners. Modifications of plans were discussed as the operators pressed for arbitration while the miners favored矿 opposition.
In Butte on January 9 Joseph EF Riley, deposed as city treasurer by a unanimous city council vote, appeared at the office, changed the safe combination, and locked himself in the teller’s cage. His successor Thomas McCarthy sat in the outer office as the dispute with the surety company heads toward court.
Washington January AP reports that Senate Finance Chairman Smoot proposed a full repeal of the inheritance tax in revising the tax relief bill. Democrats Fletcher and Tramwell attacked the tax, while leaders in South Carolina and Arkansas urged repeal along with Arkansas Lt Gov McCall. Smoot signaled a Republican shift and Mellon supports general reform. Treasury backs state over federal control.
