A large fire at a beano party in Pawtucket trapped about 209 people with at least a score or more sent to hospitals for serious burns and injuries. Firemen rescued many by running through flames and lowering ladders as smoke filled the building in the business district. Roads iced and crowded delayed emergency response briefly, but police later said no deaths. Continued on Page 2.
Birmingham January 4 Representative Lester Hill a New Deal supporter overwhelmingly defeated former Senator J Thomas Heflin in Alabama's senatorial primary. With 1024 of 2200 boxes tabulated Hill led Heflin 74034 to 35938 while Charles W Williams trailed with 4300. Williams and Botts opposed the Black Connery agea and hours bill in campaign speeches. State Auditor John J. Holmes reports Montana operated on a viable business basis in 1937 and estimates 1947 income at 25,835,629.82 with gross disbursements around 34,020,064. The summary notes a net gain of about 81,002,955.18 for 1937 and outlines major fund incomes and disbursements across general, university millage, gasoline drawback, liquor board, and highway funds.

Washington January 4 The House Agriculture committee received a resolution from the United States Livestock Sanitary Association urging continued maintenance of sanitary restrictions to safeguard the U S livestock industry from foreign animal diseases. The resolution cites hoof and mouth disease outbreaks in Germany Belgium and France.
Four armed robbers invaded the J Edward Meyer home in the Gold Coast of Long Island, bound and gagged six household members, and escaped with jewelry valued at 390000 and 400 in cash. They loaded a 300 pound safe wrapped in a rug, then spent over an hour ransacking the mansion. Victims included Mrs Florence W Meyer, her daughter Florence age 17, the butler, cook, and two maids.
Washington January 4 President Roosevelt completed a tentative chart of federal spending for 1938-39 and officials predicted a deficit near 1 billion dollars. The budget to Congress tomorrow would not balance and may revise the current year's deficit up to about 1.25 billion. The plan anticipates relief and naval spending with final totals set later amid recession and world arms buildup.

He learned she had eloped to Indiana and married 31 year old drummer Rueset Hughes at Auburn Indiana. Both were students at Michipac State Normal College and neighbors. The county clerk Karl Walter confirmed the marriage.
