A large meteor lit northern Ohio and western Pennsylvania with a brilliant red blue flame, passing through the outer atmosphere without striking the ground. A detonation and distant rumble were heard at Greenville Pennsylvania, Morrisville Pennsylvania and Norwalk Ohio as the fireball faded.
A. I. Weil of General Petroleum asks Attorney General A. Webb to launch an immediate probe into alleged gasoline tax fraud by employees of major oil firms. He claims the scheme could have cost California between 3 and 5 million dollars and seeks punishment for those involved and exoneration for noninvolved firms. The plea is supported by officials from Standard, General, Shell, Associated, and Union oil companies.
A coroner's jury found Minnie Tandono, 74, died from a broken neck after slipping on Christmas Day at Helland rink. The rink officials were blamed for the accident.
Probes into the killing of three rum runners off Newport Rhode Island are conducted by Lieut Commander C C Von Paulsen. Proceedings were secret with guardsmen questioned about an order to fire on the Black Duck without warning aboard a Coast Guard patrol boat.
Francis M Stephenson reports Washington where justice and treasury departments push stricter enforcement of liquor laws. The Justice Department seeks court ruling that ordering liquor transport makes a conspirator of the order giver. Prohibition officials announce an agreement with industrial alcohol makers to cut production. Melton backs Coast Guard actions in the Black Duck chase off Newport, saying the crew acted within the law amid Republican friction in the Senate.
Dense fog caused a collision at Keard's dry dock Brooklyn when ferry William Hearst rammed tug Mutant mid crash. Eighteen aboard fell into water. four tug crewmen were badly hurt as tug crushed between ferry and breakwater. Captain Bars drifted away. Rescue and hospital care followed amid fog.
Secretary Wilbur will visit the Kettleman oil fields in California within weeks to push further for oil conservation. He backs the unit system to pool ownership and operations so no single driller drains adjacent holdings.

Henry Wilson a Black youth was jailed in Monros Virginia on an AP report for a criminal incident involving four young White women six weeks prior.
A deadly crash near Wooster and Shreve Ohio claims ten youths after a train strikes a bus carrying 20 high school students returning from a basketball game. Driver Joseph Baker, 50, survived but shaken, while several injured face critical conditions. Names identified among the dead include Claude Hepp 27 Eugene Tolley 17 Wayne Gruft and others.
Three leaders and 20 members of three narcotic rings were indicted by a federal grand jury after an investigation and Harlem nightclub raid. Louis Saccarona and brother Frank were named as leaders, along with Joseph Gialelli of Greenwich Village.
A jury of five women and seven men was selected to try John 330 ton, a 26 year old dancing master, charged with murdering his wife Luce on a highway near Los Angeles last November. Prosecutors say he arranged the ride to collect a $10 000 life insurance payout. Bolton said his wife cried out as two robbers held them up and shot her.
Washington Jan 3 AP Flames shot skyward from the capitol in a spectacular blaze that threatened the document room housing historic national records. Firemen fought 45 minutes to extinguish flames in the artists studio atop the house side near the dome. Carl Moberly was carried unconscious. investigators awaited his recovery. Fire crews faced narrow corridors and winding stairs hindering water access as hoses stretched up to the fourth floor. Continues on Page 2.
New York January 3. Dr Charles Stelzle denied reports that the Federal Council of Churches of Christ in America planned to oust him for unethical conduct or that its Chicago committee decided to dismiss him. The council spokesman refuted claims he organized the motion picture lobby for Hollywood and was removed as an officer.
Joy Crow fifteen and Paul Duty sixteen were bound over to Lancaster County District Court to face charges of first degree murder for the slayings of Axel Johnson and Babe Snyder near Grant Nebraska on Sunday in a quarrel over liquor. Crow confessed firing the shots. Duty, his stepbrother, is charged with implication.
Washington Jan 3 United support by Senate Republicans for the long pending tariff pledge was to be debated at a party conference called by Senator Watson Indiana. Republican leaders pledged to keep the tariff before the Senate until disposed of and a final drive for passage was expected to begin Monday. The Democratic Republican Independent coalition with a Senate majority in earlier tariff fights urged that nothing else be considered before the Christmas recess except the tariff.
Alonzo Price admitted during a police interview to confronting Rubben Heyman and Mrs. Dorothy Burgess at Lutthergile station, then forcing Heyman to a lonely spot and assaulting Burgess. Price swallowed poison and talked before being captured after a running public safety item contest. Burgess identified him at the hospital.
State and government officials examined the til run ner Black Duck at the state pier. They indicate machine gun bullets that wounded three and killed one were fired from astern by the coast guard during a rum running attempt. The coast guard claims the Black Duck tried to escape when fired upon.
Two naval planes locating the wrecks of a pair of fighters that collided at sea, plunging into the ocean and causing ten deaths. The wreckage and bodies were found about 400 yards off Rocky Point as search forces, including tugs and mine sweepers, closed in.
In Great Falls on January 3, Senator W. T. Cowan of Box Elder was named chairman of the committee forming a Montana Grain Farmers association. State Agriculture Commissioner A. Fr Stafford is an ex officio member. The group will organize and hear talks on federal farm board work with an open session tomorrow morning and an executive session in the afternoon. Members appointed on December 12 include W. Schnitzler, John A. Wilson, D. Conser, J. Price, and Senator Cowan. all were present with Stafford.
A baby girl born today to Mr and Mrs Henry Huls near Fleattice Nebraska already has a “toothy” smile. The attending physician noted two perfectly developed teeth in the infant's mouth. The unusual birth occurred on January 3 according to AP dispatch.
The Hague resumption of the reparations conference drew 18 European powers and the United States in a calm opening. Two committees were formed on German and non German reparations, with Belgium’s Jaspar and France’s Jouls Loucheur as chairs. The German reparations panel asked financial experts to review subcommittee reports, while concerns about equitable treatment for small creditors were voiced and addressed.
Lincoln Neb Jan 3 AP Appropriation of 260111 to repay depositors on banks run under the state guarantees fund was declared unconstitutional by local district judges. Gov Arthur Weaver led the suit to settle administration matters, with the fund hampered by a 20 million deficit and bank injunctions. Weaver expected to call a special session to address state banking matters.
Senator Watson of Indiana urged a formal policy announcement by the federal Farm Board. He proposed inviting board members to discuss their grain program with the Senate Agriculture Committee to gauge its scope and possible takeover of existing grain elevator facilities in connection with the national grain corporation.
