Thames and major streams rose after a heavy thaw and rain. East London districts flooded, disrupting trains and flooding roads. Barges broke from moorings near Kingston and some sank, creating obstructions under bridges as workers faced long delays. Continues on pages two.
Justice Galen dissents from Montana Supreme Court ruling that upheld district court decision against Janet T Ingersoll and her husband Rufus Ingersoll. They were suspended from the University of Montana in January 1927 for serving liquor to students near campus, with deans citing campus welfare.
A mob threatened Robert Hamilton, the man who killed three city officers, after his arrest for robbery and holdup in Aalmon Idaho. A Salmon posse tracked him to a barn near the shooting site and felled him with a volley, delivering shotgun wounds to head and body. He was bound and jailed at Challin as reports said mob violence loomed.
Congress returns after vacation with a busy slate. The House will open at noon on an appropriation bill the second of the session and first of the regular supply measures. Bronson M Cutting will be sworn in as Republican appointer to fill the New Mexico Senate vacancy. Senator Norris will pursue a resolution to abolish the lame duck session.
Oakland Cal Jan 3 AP riot calls went to central police when William Davis a member of the police department was shot and critically injured while attempting to arrest two men Edward Lapierre and Leo Archambot on forgery charges in Los Angeles. Riot squads surrounded the house and arrested the thugs after Davis was rescued.
Klamath Falls Oregon January 3 Orville Davis a Klamath Indian confessed to killing Lawrence Walker 25 Indian in Walker's Beatty home He said he crawled through a window and struck twice at Walker who slept in a bed Davis described an altercation at a New Year's party before the fatal attack.
Washington January 3 The famous packers consent decree separating them from non meat packing business faced the Supreme Court for a second time The Swift and Armour groups led by Charles Evans Hughes again argued to set aside the decree seeking to limit the firms to meat packing activities only
In Little Roule Arkansas a car chase ended with A T Barnett of Missouri killed after an attacker and a woman companion forced him from the vehicle. The assailants drove off with the victim's body while Barnett's wife was hurled from the car and wounded. The wounded woman was hospitalized.
In Bloomsburg Pennsylvania on January 3 Judge Evans signed an order permitting Sheriff Petit to move nine prisoners from the county jail to the Church of Christ for baptism. Rev E L Wy Huffer, pastor, conducted Christmas and New Year services at the jail when the men professed conversion.
William Edward Hickman pleaded not guilty to kidnapping and murdering Marian Parker by reason of insanity. He initially sought insanity only for the murder charge, then broadened it to cover both accusations. Judge Carlos Hardy set trial for January 25 after denying a 35 day continuance. The courtroom was crowded as Perry Parker, the slain girl’s step-brother, sat with witnesses nervously watching Hickman.
Rangoon Jan 3 reports Captain W T Lancaster and Mrs Keith Miller battled a large brown snake that crawled from under a seat during a Rangoon Tavoy flight. Miller struck and killed the creature after it moved toward the cockpit as the pair continued their long air voyage from Croydon Stage to Australia begun October 14.
Washington orders 1 0 0 0 additional Marines to join 4 0 0 already in Nicaragua to crush Sandino. Bluejackets recalled from ships in Nicaraguan waters will guard ships so Marines can pursue rebels toward Nueva Segovia and landing strongholds. Marines furious after recent guerrilla attacks vow to press campaign.Continued on Page Seven.
Cambodge Mass Jan 3. Albert E Roberts, once discouraged by a failed job, shot himself today just before a letter from his wife in Hemet California arrived announcing he had become rich from a discovery on property he owned.
Stockton of Yarksten was re elected president of the Montana Farmers Bureau for the fourth term at the annual meeting. Ton Alerrin of Telena was elected first vice president and A I Small of Creston second vice president. J G Tirsson of Annilton won the state wide bow feeding contest. The group discussed pardons, federal tax measures, extension service bills, and irrigation projects.
Arthur Guy Empey author and former Canadian soldier is sued in Los Angeles for 19990 by Florence Evelyn Martin Rice who seeks the return of a mounted loan. Rice attached a signed document stating a 3500 gift from her and asking for duplicates of jewelry lost via Empey, claiming it is a loan.
Damaged OCR describes an ice gorge on the Yellowstone river near Livingston. A thaw raised temperatures and released a mass of slush ice that blocked the current threat to Northern Pacific tracks, diverting the river to the opposite bank.
George Remus was kept out of an insane asylum as a writ of habeas corpus hearing was extended to next Thursday by Judge Chauncey Bell of the common pleas court. The judge said a matter of grave public policy required more time before ruling on the writ application.
Boston January 1 AP Naval investigation begins into the sinking of the submarine by the Coast Guard Destroyer Vaulding off Provincetown December 17 with four lives lost. A naval court of inquiry convenes at Charlestown Navy Yard at 10 a.m.
New York January 3 AP An autopsy on prominent stage star Emily Stevens indicated death from natural causes. Medical Examiner Moerig ordered vital organs sent to the city toxicologist for chemical analysis. The findings did not support an overdose theory.
A Chinese vegetable farmer named Mow Ju Ton was murdered yesterday at his farm southwest of Mead Farm. He was shot thrice and his throat cut, with $57 reportedly taken. The body was found warm later by a partner, Tor Ham, as investigators sought clues among two male suspects in the all-Chinese colony. The county attorney described the killing as a robbery and noted unclear motives. Contnued on Page Two.
Washington reports the Supreme Court ruling that federal courts lack authority to place prisoners on probation after starting sentences. Dr Fred erck Cook, described as a soldier of fortune and explorer, remains in Leavenworth prison after about two years of a MH year nine month term for using the mails to defray operations. Parole eligibility is set for March 3, 1958.

French authorities express optimism and see alignment with Briand’s original spirit, while the American reservations and Washington’s intent to broaden the signatories are noted as influential factors. The pact is viewed as consistent with current French policy.

Egyptologist Howard Carter resumes digs at Tutankhamun’s tomb and uncovers a camph jar in a wonderfully preserved state said to contain the viscera of the ancient king. The alabaster vessel is beautifully carved and highly significant to the tomb’s contents.
Seven children adrift on an ice floe off Wilhelmshaven were rescued by a naval vessel after drifting for four hours. The group had been playing on a crusted ice shelf when the tide broke it free and the rescue party arrived just in time as darkness fell, sparing them from disaster.
In Cal or Jan 38 AP report, chefav Pineda admits he and two others killed Tuan Pineda for $28 he carried. The elder Pineda was found dead in a ditch the morning of December 5. The son allegedly took $8 as his share while Avalag and Ryan were named as the other two involved.
The dead body of Amelia Appleby, once connected to a Chicago inventor, was found in a sack tossed into a ditch near San Fernando. An inquest heard trauma from a broken nose and chest bruises. autopsy cited lung congestion from exposure. Dr Charles McMillan, linked to the case, refused to testify. Whittier testified seeing Appleby in a car with the doctor December 22 or 23. McMillan was arrested. A murder indictment is planned by the district attorney.
