Rep. May of Kentucky proposed a congressional committee probe into TVA activities amid claims of unsavory disclosures. He criticized Senator Norris plan for FTC oversight and urged a direct inquiry into TVA misrepresentation of Gilbertsville dam plans and alleged legal reporting failures, noting a $112 million project.
Everett Washington January report says G Weston held in Snohomish County Jail awaiting transfer to state prison for burglary. Weston allegedly told deputies he left wife and children in Manhattan after a dispute four years ago. He claimed a man on a government project was identified as him and told officers to keep going.
The Supreme Court ruled private Alabama and Duke Power challenges to federal financing of public power projects invalid. The decision sanctions PWA loans and grants totaling about 146.9 million dollars for plants in Alabama and South Carolina, affecting 23 states and numerous projects blocked by litigation.
Detroit Jan 3 The Ford Motor Co asked the National Labor Relations Board to vacate its recent finding that Ford violated the Wagner Act and the board said it would defer court action while it considers a request for a new hearing. The petition claims Ford was denied a fair hearing and will present evidence to challenge or reinterpret the decision in light of history. If rehearing is denied the board would seek enforcement in the U S Circuit Court. The case centers on alleged union interference at the Dearborn plant and reinstatement of 29 discharged workers. The board had ordered compliance within10 days and the petition was filed in Washington.
Walter Lippmann questions if Robert H. Jackson a convert to New Deal ideals. He argues Jackson’s speeches oppose New Deal policy yet echo liberal critics. The piece notes five years of New Deal control with little antimonopoly action and hints at political tension within administration.
Chinese military authorities report flying columns under Gen. Chang Fah-Kwei have driven Japanese from Hangchow with heavy losses. Sharp fighting develops along the shores of the West Lake near the historic capital of Chaklang province as Japanese insist their occupation is complete and unopposed.
Detroit January 4 The Michigan state police reported 17 year old Trudie Bennett daughter of Ford Motor company service director Harry Bennett has been missing since Monday evening Capt Don Leonard state police rushed to the Bennett home in Ypsilanti to lead the probe The girl a Michigan Normal College student had left to meet her sister and never reached the college office reported she failed to arrive at registration and her father a Ford executive has long been connected to Ford security and labor issues.
A miner at the old Boaz mine near Norris died when a cage jam caused a break and plunged to the shaft bottom. Another miner, Wil Warner, was not injured and is survived by his widow.
The Democratic National Committee reported to Congress it ends the year with 8,495.59 in cash and 219,791.52 in unpaid obligations and total receipts of 1,294,748.47 for the year. The Republican National Committee showed receipts of 628,046 and disbursements of 622,185. Knoxville TVA officials declined comment on Senator Norris from an investigation resolution.
Montana senators Wheeler and Murray praised the president’s annual address, pledging support for wage hours end-monopoly and farm measures. They urged liberal cooperation in Congress to pass the recommendations, with Murray calling it a broad review and O Connor deeming the message temperate and sensible for lifting the recession.

Lister Hill backs the measure while J Thomas Heflin and Charles W Williams oppose it. Hugo L Black, now Supreme Court justice, introduced the bill. Governor Bibb Graves will appoint the party nominee.
London reports that Europe’s democracies and the League of Nations lauded President Roosevelt’s address to Congress. France and Britain hailed his faith that democracy offers future peace, while Rome’s fascists reacted cautiously to his critique of dictatorial regimes. British officials called the speech evidence of shared aims with American policy.
