Two Americans employed at a mine near San Francisco del Oro in Chihuahua were kidnapped last Tuesday and held in a mountain camp. They were ransomed for 700 pesos after initial demand of 10,000 pesos. Connors returned with the money and Wiley and Connors were released and reached San Francisco del Oro. The embassy reports they were not seriously harmed.
Mrs. Mary Drew, daughter of British statesman William E. Gladstone, died at Trawarden on Saturday in her 85th year. She was prominent in Victorian political and literary life and served as secretary to her parents until their deaths, later remaining with her husband the Rev. Tarry Drew, rector of Hawarden.
Washington January 2. The senate faces a sharp clash over seating Frank L. Smith after the resignation of Senator William B. Melley. A prominent senator prepared a statement signaling the plan to vote against Smith taking the oath, amid a flurry of discussions.
Henry Munt, accused of shooting J C Roberts to death yesterday in a slack here, turned himself in at the county jail. A coroner's jury charged him with the shooting. He wandered a night and day in halls north of here, pursued by a sheriff posse of fifty. Trial likely later this month. he refuses to speak.

Los Angeles reports a dramatic case as Arthur Citistrem a painting contractor and former army aviator, allegedly killed his two children Marion and another infant and attempted to take gas, with police summoned by Mrs Chilstrom after discovering the bodies. Tremors were felt across Calexico California and Mexicali Mexico from midnight to morning, with bricks loosened and existing cracks in walls worsening. Despite the shocks property loss in the two towns is estimated at about one million dollars. A fire in Mexicali shortly after the quake buried two.

Lewistown January 2. The body of Stallislaw Kenney a 56 year old coal miner was brought from the Jackman mine in Forest Grove after a blast instantly killed him. He had returned to inspect a blast when it exploded. Kenney, a war veteran, left five children.
Washington reports a projected surge of loan requests against 3 099 000 adjusted service certificates totaling over 300 million dollars. Veterans Bureau Director Hines says no bank concern is warranted since Congress provided ample funds to redeem all certificates if borrowers repay in good faith. The Indianapolis dispatch notes approximately 215 million in loan value as of January 1, with borrowers limited by age. maximum yearly loans range from 86 to 120 dollars per thousand, depending on age, and the 20th year cap reaches 900 dollars per 100.

He was arrested after questioning at the Lackey rooming house and held at the county jail for fingerprinting and further inquiry.
Denver begins trial of Mrs Catherine Trilling for murder of her husband Hernan after accusations of self defense. State contends she shot him in the back during a scuffle while riding in his car on Thanksgoing day. Defense argues she acted in self defense and pleads not guilty to first degree murder.
Jacksonville Florida January 25 W Price 30 head of a local automobile firm and R J Richardson 26 aeronautical engineer were burned to death when their plane crashed to earth near Taxon Field the municipal airpost today
Austin Texas January 2 UPI A report says Texas American Legion post in Elgin requested protection for Willie Giese, arrested on murder charges connected to the killings of Charles Engler, his wife, and their adopted daughter. Giese was jailed in Travis County after being arrested Friday. the case has a long mystery with prior grand jury involvement.
