Rose Bowl battle ends in decisive USC victory as Pittsburg succumbs 47 to 14. Trojans dominate from kickoff, outclassing the previously undefeated Panthers and denying their renowned All-America stars any notable advantage.
In New York on January 1, reports state a former immigrant servant who became Mrs. Savin, fourth wife of Frank W. Savin, broker, inherits his $20,000,000 fortune after an appendicitis operation. The wife, aged in her thirties, had worked as a housekeeper for the Savin house in Port Chester and was born on a small farm in what is now Czecho Slovakia.
A prominent citizenry group in Mullan and Shoshoni county plans to petition President Hoover for a presidential pardon for officials convicted of conspiring against the national prohibition act. Among the 24 convicted are village officials liquor sellers and the Shoshoni county sheriff.
Four deaths attributed to acute poisoning occurred today in New York and 69 persons were taken to Bellevue and King’s County Hospitals with alcoholism. Two men died at home one in a lodging house on the Bowery and a third at Bellevue. Seven women were among those admitted to the hospitals.
New Year’s Day disaster in Paisley near Glasgow claims many young lives. Fires, crowded exits, and a failing door caused panicked stampede as children crowded stairs and the stage. Hospitals report numerous deaths and some survivors remain in critical condition.
A crudely designed bomb wrapped in Christmas trim exploded in a Seat Pleasant kitchen killing Mrs. Naomi Walt Brady and injuring seven others as the family gathered for an expected holiday greeting. The device, left on a neighbor's front porch, contained dynamite and brick powder. eight people suffered injuries from cuts to serious shock and burns while furniture and walls were damaged.
Whiteville North Carolina January 1 Four men Pope Floyd Hubert Floyd Woodell Millstan and Seale Hill are charged in the shooting of Columbus County Deputy Sheriff Hoke Smith who was wounded while he refused to accompany them on a search for a stolen car. Smith had helped seize a whiskey still the day before destroying mash and hundreds of gallons of liquor.
Edsel B. Ford announced the Ford Motor Company will begin construction of a new Richmond California assembly plant in the spring, with completion expected during 1926.
Washington reports that after talks with President Hoover the Law Enforcement Commission decided unanimously not to pass judgment on the prohibition amendment. The panel plans to work until July 1 and will focus on an approach to the industrial alcohol issue, aiming to "shield no individual and no line of business" while addressing the problem. Senator Jones of Washington, assistant Republican floor leader and author of the Jones act, noted the commission faces the "most difficult" enforcement challenge. Senator Townes has been in talks with the commission and the Hoover administration during the holiday period.
Des Moines reports a new sugar compound shown by tuberculosis research to possibly sever the bond between the germ and a human cell that Tb bacteria use to spread. Dr. William Charles White of the U S Public Health Service described the development as a hopeful step toward a cure, noting the possibility of stopping infection if the germ cannot attach to the cell.
Gary Indiana January 1 A dispatch reports Father John R Dovilla pronounced to recover after being found near death following an overcoat donation to a vagrant on Christmas day. Father Merillo, knighted by King Albert of Belgium on Christmas Eve for World War I heroism, is mentioned in connection to the same report.
Terusalem January 1 Father Mallon directed excavations reported yesterday to have wrought to night the biblical site.
A fire of undetermined origin destroyed the 40 year old Horse Barn and damaged nearby property at the Boulder State School for the Deaf and Blind. Insurance values and exact losses were not yet confirmed, as fire crews limited spread and investigated the scene.
Abe W. Norblad a 48 year old attorney from Astoria Oregon and former president of the state senate automatically became governor upon the death of Governor Isaac L Patterson. Norblad inherits the duties and faces the responsibilities of Oregon’s chief executive following the vacancy.
Two 16 year old boys Edgar Frederick and Franklin Benson were arrested in Bozeman Montana in the shooting of infantryman Hequette on furlough from West Point. Hequette was wounded in the neck during a rifle practice session near Philadelphia and remained in critical condition. He is the son of Mrs Ruby Bequette of Bozeman and has siblings including a brother who attended Montana State College. The incident follows a high school rifle club practice.
Kalispell Jan 1 Willam Conrad 20 son of C B Conrad president of Conrad National bank was accidentally shot and killed while hunting on Flathead river five miles southeast of Kalispell His body found today after he and uncles C B Baldwin and M R Baldwin returned thinking he would follow His gun entangled in brush discharged striking his chest the youth died at once and his body was found near a log where he sat
Frosty Peters of Montana starred as the East defeated the West 19 to 7 before 65,000 fans at Kozi Stadium, San Francisco. Peters kicked two field goals and charged the line with key runs while Benny Lam and Sloan sparked West scoring efforts, but the East pulled away late. Continues on page two.
Laughter applause and music filled Broad Street as about 10 000 marchers in a fairy land procession welcomed the New Year. The city’s annual show drew a record crowd, with gem studded trains of royalty and laboriously clad figures ranging from the ridiculous to the sublime in a vibrant parade. Elaborate capes, headdresses, and floral decorations added color as sections moved past the judges stand after a three hour march.
Princess Marie Jose of Belgium, bound for Rome to wed Crown Prince Humbert, said goodbye to the royal household in Brussels. Each staff member received her photograph with a signed inscription as the royal farewell moved both the princess and her longtime aides.
Dan Hutte reports Jeff Driscoll aged 41 a court clerk in Silver How county was fatally injured in a vehicle wreck on the Buttie Anaconda highway. He died several hours later at a local hospital. Driscoll worked as a lame keeper for the Anaconda Copper Mining company.
Lexington Kentucky January 1 1 Jouett Shouse chairman of the democratic national executive committee issued a statement denouncing the Smoot Hawley tariff bill as the most impotent and ex tortionate measure ever presented to Congress. He urged that a proper coalition tariff benefiting farmers will be enacted or there will be no tariff plan at all.
In New Orleans on Jan 1 two streetcars were exploded in separate incidents. The first car struck a dynamite charge near a curve injuring none of the ten passengers but causing shock among Mrs. N. MacPherson and Mrs. Whitney David. A second blast on North Peters street damaged a car, broke windows and loosened floorboards without injuries. A police and federal marshal investigation follows. News from Birmingham reports Senator J Thomas Hefffin arrives for a campaign meeting on his bid for re election to the Senate and Hugh Lowko for governor on independent tickets with no further statements expected.
Charles A. Lindbergh says aviation in the Americas will advance rapidly with new designs. He notes no current industry slump but a seasonal rise in demand, and expects substantial improvements in planes this year. He cites ongoing laboratory work and structural advances shaping future aircraft.
